Arsenal Vs West Ham (0-2) Report: Mavropanos Returns To Haunt The Gunners

The hosts went into the game knowing that they must win in order to regain the top spot they had kept warm over Christmas, following their 1-1 draw to Liverpool at Anfield.

West Ham were looking to build on their recent win over Manchester United, which was their fifth in their last seven Premier League games.

In the first half, Arsenal were in complete control but trailed at the break after a contentious Tomas Soucek opener after 13 minutes.

Despite a lengthy VAR check, there was no conclusive evidence to prove that Jarrod Bowen, who assisted the goal, had failed to keep the ball in play. It’s a mightily frustrating one for Arsenal fans and Mikel Arteta, who experienced a similar decision go against them at Newcastle.

It wasn’t all rosy for West Ham in the opening 45, as Lucas Paqueta pulled up after half an hour played, having also had an issue in the warm-up before the game, and was replaced by Said Benrahma.

Arsenal came out firing again in the second half before Konstantinos Mavropanos headed in from a corner against his former club, extending the lead to 2-0.

Gabriel Jesus missed a golden opportunity to pull one back for the Gunners, blazing his header at the back post over the bar.

Things got even worse for Arsenal when former Hammer Declan Rice brought down Emerson with a late challenge in the box. However, David Raya somewhat spared Rice’s blushes, saving Benrahma’s penalty.

The smash-and-grab win for David Moyes is his first league win at Arsenal and propels his team up to sixth. Arsenal, on the other hand, miss the chance to return to the Premier League summit and remain two points behind Liverpool.
