Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad achieved two significant club records with their decisive 1-0 win over Manchester United in Sunday’s Premier League match.

The Gunners understood that a loss could pave the way for the champions to secure their title at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, following Manchester City’s victory over Fulham on Saturday.

Arsenal’s resistance against Man United’s ineffective attacks in the second half propelled them back to the top of the table, overtaking Man City. This puts them in contention for the title until the final day of the season.

Despite securing a 3-1 victory against the Red Devils earlier in the season, Arsenal had suffered defeats in their previous two visits to Old Trafford and hadn’t completed a double over Manchester United since the 2006–07 campaign.

Nevertheless, Arteta’s side took advantage of a defensive mistake by Erik ten Hag’s team to score a crucial first-half goal courtesy of Leandro Trossard, which ultimately secured their victory.

What Two New Records Did Arsenal Achieve?

This season, Arsenal has notched up 27 victories in the Premier League, breaking their previous record of 26 wins set in the 2022–23, 2003–04, and 2001–02 seasons.

Following their title-winning seasons in 2003-04 and 2001-02, Arsenal has not achieved more victories in a single campaign until now. They haven’t achieved more victories in a single campaign since their record of 29 wins in the 1970–71 Division One season, which featured 42 matches.

Additionally, the Gunners have scored 89 goals in the 2023–24 season, surpassing last season’s tally of 88 and marking their highest goal count in a Premier League campaign. This achievement also represents their highest goal total in a top-flight season since they scored 90 goals in 1963–64.

After the victory at Old Trafford, Arteta expressed his admiration for his team, emphasising that Arsenal’s remarkable achievements in 2024 should be seen as “history” rather than simply “progress.”

Arsenal’s boss said “They just mentioned, it’s 27 wins in the Premier League. It’s the most in the history of this football club in 130 years. That’s not progress; that’s history, and that’s very, very difficult to do, especially in the league that we are playing now. Big compliment to all the players and the staff for what they have done.”

Furthermore, Arsenal’s clean sheet at the Theatre of Dreams marked their 11th away from home in the 2023–24 Premier League season, the most since Chelsea achieved an unprecedented 12 clean sheets on their travels in the 2008–09 season.

However, the Gunners won’t have the opportunity to replicate Chelsea’s defensive record, with their last game against Everton at the Emirates on May 19, while City face West Ham United in their final fixture after a midweek clash with Spurs, making it a crucial week for both teams.
