Arsenal are reportedly targeting Real Madrid star, Aurelien Tchouameni, if negotiations over alternative options fail to materialise this summer.

Mikel Arteta will deem the 2022-23 campaign as a successful season, that could have been a historic year, as the club competed in a title race for the first time in just under a decade.

Arteta’s side were top of the table for the majority of the season, boasting an eight-point lead over Manchester City in February. However, they were unable to maintain these performances and ended the season in second place.

Champions League football will return to the Emirates for the first time in seven years, meaning a list of summer additions could be on joining the north London side.

Declan Rice has been tipped to could be join the Gunners and according to reports, the both clubs have agreed a deal for the West Ham midfielder – setting a new British transfer record at £105m.

However, the Gunners are after a further midfield addition, as they are reportedly keen on signing Aurelien Tchouameni as a ‘back-up’ option to Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

The France international had a mixed opening campaign following his move from Monaco for around £70m. The 23-year-old made 50 appearances and contributed to four assists in the process.

However, Tchouameni only played 47 minutes in the Champions League knockout stages, playing the role of substitute against Chelsea and semi-final defeat to Manchester City.

Eduardo Camavinga, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Federico Valverde are all higher in the pecking order than the former Monaco midfielder and new signing, Jude Bellingham, has added further competition.

The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder signed for Los Blancos in the opening weeks of June and is expected to be heavily involved during pre-season.
