Arsenal have been linked with Ivan Toney as their new striker but it seems The Gunners are leaning towards a more affordable option.
Who are Arsenal targeting?
According to The Sun, Arsenal have put in a £22m bid for Getafe striker Borja Mayoral. Mayoral is the second highest scorer in La Liga with 12 goals. Only Jude Bellingham is beating him with 13.
Mayoral has mainly spent his career in La Liga as he’s a product of the Real Madrid youth academy. He has had loan spells at Levante, Roma and Wolfsburg but he struggled to find form at any of the clubs.
In 2022, Real Madrid sold him to Getafe and now he’s enjoying the best football of his career. He’s now into his third season and has scored 26 goals overall. Mayoral helped Getafe climb the ranks in La Liga. Getafe are currently 8th place and are fighting for European football next season.
Mayoral is 26-years-old and has played in three different countries. He’s clearly an experienced player, in great form, and if Arsenal can secure him for £22m, it’d be a bargain, especially in today’s market.
Why have Arsenal given up on Toney?
Arsenal are seemingly put off by the price attached to Toney. Brentford are demanding at least £80m for a player who hasn’t played since May due to betting breaches.
Toney also seems quite content at Brentford. He revealed in a recent interview that he has felt loved and supported during his ban and plans to give back to Brentford when he’s allowed to play again in their next Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal’s current strikers
Arsenal don’t seem as ruthless in front of goal as they were last season. Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah aren’t pleasing the fans as they just have 13 goals between the two of them in all competitions this season. Worth a reminder that Mayoral has 12 goals in La Liga.
Jesus even strangely admitted that goals isn’t his strong point.
Arsenal need a clinical striker if they’re to become serious title contenders once more.
