Arsenal’s total xG generated in their 3-1 win on Sunday was the highest Liverpool have ever faced in a Premier League game on record.
The Gunners propelled themselves back into the title race by beating the league leaders at the Emirates Stadium, closing the gap to just two points.
Goals from Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard secured the win for Mikel Arteta’s side, who were level at the break after a messy own-goal by Gabriel Magalhaes on the stroke of half-time.
It was Liverpool’s second league defeat of the season, having lost to Tottenham back in September before going on a 15-game unbeaten streak.
In fact, Liverpool’s defeats to the two North London clubs are their only losses over a span of 34 Premier League games.
It was an out-of-character performance from Jurgen Klopp’s side, who were completely stifled by Arsenal. It took until the 62nd minute for Liverpool to complete a single shot-on-target.
The Expected Goals (xG) from the match highlights Arsenal’s dominance in their win. Arteta’s generated a total xG of 3.52—the highest faced by Liverpool in the Premier League on record—compared to Liverpool’s xG of just 0.41.

Arsenal’s xG tally overtakes the previous record against the Reds, which was 3.47 in Manchester City’s 4-1 victory in the 2020/21 campaign.
Although this result might not determine the winner or loser of the Premier League title, it undoubtedly boosts Arsenal’s confidence at a crucial juncture.
Simultaneously, it hampers Liverpool’s momentum as they approach a pivotal six-week period, including the League Cup final at Wembley and concluding with consecutive Premier League matches against title contenders Man City and local rivals Everton.
