Arsenal have finally announced the transfer of Jurrien Timber from Ajax today, with their new defender taking the number 12 shirt.

Although Arsenal were able to confirm a deal with Ajax last week for their versatile defender, there was still a lengthy delay on the announcement for Timber with fans forced to wait until Friday for the grand unveiling.

During the announcement released on Friday, Timber is wearing Arsenal’s new kit for the 2023/24 season, notably with the number 12 on his shorts.

Arsenal’s number 12 last season was William Saliba, but the French centre back decided to switch to number two this season after becoming one of the Gunners’ most important players last year.

Timber cost Arsenal around £38m with add ons and he described his love for the North London club upon signing, after growing up watching the Gunners.

“It was because of my brothers. They were always Arsenal fans, and I just loved seeing Arsenal play.

“They had big players, the way they played, the style. I just love the club. I had this from a young age, but my brothers kind of put that in me. I liked watching Robin van Persie of course, and Thierry Henry. They were my favourite players.”

Thierry Henry famously wore the number 12 at Arsenal during his second spell at the club, which helped Timber make the decision to take Saliba’s vacated shirt.

Now Arsenal have announced Timber it should only be a matter of time before their headline signing of the summer is announced, with their deal for Declan Rice moving closer to completion by the day.
