Andros Townsend has been a free agent since the summer as Everton didn’t want to renew his contract. Townsend has now signed a short-term contract with Luton which will see him at the club until January. Luton, of course have the option to renew if they deem it necessary.

Townsend has recently recovered from an ACL injury that has kept him out of football for 18 months. In his first season at Everton he scored 7 times and assisted 4. Last season he didn’t play at all which led to Everton not renewing his contract.

“I feel like it’s a good fit and these last couple of weeks have been good for both parties,” Townsend told Luton’s social media.

“I think it had to be right and I feel over the last two weeks we’ve had a look at each other and done that. I’ve seen where I can help this team and on the flipside the manager has seen where I can help – whether that’s on the pitch, in the dressing room or on the training field – with my enthusiasm and experience.

“Plus, Luton are my local team – I live 20-25 minutes away so I’ve kept my eye on their progress and watching the Championship play-off final and see them win promotion was great for the club.

“I never thought I’d pull on the Luton shirt, so it’s a huge honour to play again in the Premier League for this club, and hopefully get help this club get as many points as we can and see where it takes us.”

Townsend has been speaking to talkSport where he admitted he was worried he’d have to retire:

“It did come to a point where we are, in October now, I felt like my time might have gone. I started doing media work, working with Sky quite regularly and what have you. People were saying ‘wait until January, you might get a chance in January’.

“The problem is, if they didn’t want to take a look at me after not playing in 18 months, what is another six months? You are talking two years.

“So I would never officially retire but I feel like my time may have gone but hugely grateful to Rob Edwards and Gary Sweet, the chief executive at Luton.”
