Despite starting in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham, Andre Onana was expected to fly to Yamoussoukro to play in Cameroon’s AFCON opener with Guinea but he ran into a big problem.

Why will Onana miss Cameroon’s opener?

Onana jetted off to west Africa after Manchester United’s game and he’s currently in the Ivory Coast. His private jet was supposed to take off to Yamoussoukro but has been blocked due to extreme weather conditions.

Cameroon’s line-up has been revealed and Onana isn’t apart of the matchday squad. The 27-year-old was granted permission to stay behind with the team so he could play in matches against Wigan and Tottenham.

Onana will now travel to the Charles Konan Banny Stadium by car. He will meet up with the squad after the match and will prepare with them for their next game against Senegal.

Onana will be a big miss for Cameroon as he carried them to a third-place finish in 2021 with some incredible penalty saves.

Where can I watch Onana and Cameroon?

Sky Sports Football is broadcasting AFCON. Cameroon’s first game is about to get underway (15th January 5pm GMT). Their next match against Senegal will kick-off at 5pm GMT on Friday 19th January. Their final group stage match is against Gambia on Tuesday 23rd January – also a 5pm GMT kick-off.

When will Onana return?

Manchester United don’t play again until Sunday 28th January, so there’s a chance that he won’t miss a game for them if Cameroon fail to secure a place in the knockout stages.

The AFCON final is on the 11th February. The most Manchester United games that Onana could miss is four. Onana feared that second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir would impress and become a first team player.

Bayindir signed for Manchester United in the summer for £4.5m but has yet to make an appearance for the Red Devils yet.
