Speaking on their podcast, The Rest Is Football, Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker, and Micah Richards discussed the controversial Ibrahima Konaté tackles.

In the recent Premier League edition Merseyside Derby, there was referring controversy. Konaté made two tackles in the second half that could have seen the defender sent off.

The decision to not send Konaté off, in a game where Ashley Young had already been sent off, has been a talking point ever since the final whistle.

When speaking about the game on The Rest Is Football, Lineker said:

“Well, the story of the game was the tale of lots of yellow cards, the wrong player getting sent off and another not for very similar offences.”

Co-host, Shearer agreed saying:

“Yeah, Konaté was very, very fortunate and I think any other day another referee gives him another yellow card and he’s off.

“Ashley Young was correctly given two yellow cards, it was a stupid challenge when you’re on the yellow, but if the referee is doing that then he has to give Konaté a second yellow card. He clearly wipes him out.”

Richards also agreed with that the decision to not send Konaté off was the wrong one.
