After bravely stepping up to go in goal following Mike Maignan’s red card, AC Milan have honoured Olivier Giroud by producing one-off goalkeeper jerseys with his name and number donned on the back.

As AC Milan led 1-0 against Genoa in the Serie A on Saturday, first choice goalkeeper Mike Maignan was shown his marching orders by the referee, and with no substitute slots remaining – the Italian top flight leaders were left with a major debacle.

Known for moments of magic throughout his career, up stepped France’s all-time leading scorer Giroud who bravely took up the goalkeeping role for the final minutes of the clash, making a heroic last minute save to deny the hosts a late equaliser.

To honour his contribution towards helping his side to three points away from home, AC Milan added the 37-year-old to their official list of stoppers on their website, and also made it possible for fans to purchase a goalkeeper kit with ‘Giroud 9’ on the back.

“Last night Olivier Giroud became part of Milan history by courageously defending the Milan goal in the final minutes of the Rossoneri’s match against Genoa,” Milan‘s club statement read.

“The club has decided to honour his performance in its last line of defence by putting him in the list of goalkeepers. Additionally, fans can now purchase the goalkeeper jersey and customise it with ‘Giroud 9’.”

Another iconic moment in his glittering career, Giroud revealed that he plans to frame Maignan’s goalkeeper shirt.

“The final stop? I made a great save at the end. Almost a goal. [Davide] Calabria massacred my arm but it’s okay. I am going to frame this shirt!”

The shirt has since sold out on the official AC Milan website, with further stock expected to arrive in the coming days for fans of the San Siro club to purchase.
