Ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso reportedly has a clause in his Bayern Leverkusen contract which allows him to become the manager of Liverpool as early as next summer.

Alonso has already established himself as a capable manager. He became manager of Leverkusen last season when they were just second from bottom in the Bundesliga. By the end of the season they finished in sixth place. Leverkusen are now top of the Bundesliga after 7 games into the new season.

Liverpool aren’t the only side to have a clause in Alonso’s contract. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are the other clubs. Alonso had spells at all three clubs in his playing days and he feels he is in their debt to repay them by managing the clubs to success.

Jurgen Klopp doesn’t appear to be leaving Anfield anytime soon with his contract not expiring until 2026. A move to Real Madrid would seem more likely as Carlo Ancelotti is to become manager of Brazil next season.

Bayern Leverkusen and Liverpool could meet this season with both teams in the Europa League and both top of their groups.
