90% Of the Last 20 Winners Carried 10st 13lbs or Less
Being a handicap then weight carried in the Irish Grand National is a good place to start. The race is run over a gruelling 3m5f trip, so it’s no real shock that a massive 18 of the last 20 winners had just 10st 13lbs on their backs.
Yes, last year’s winner I Am Maximus defied this weight trend, but it still heavily favours those with 10st 13lbs or less (90%) which can put a line through several.
The 2024 Irish Grand National runners that fit the bill here are – Where It All Began, Frontal Assault, Cool Survivor, Good Time Johnny, Street Value, Daily Present, Where’s Frankie, We’llhavewon, History Of Fashion
16 Of the Last 20 Winners Also Won With 10st 8lbs or Less
With 80% of the last 20 winners also having only 10st 8lbs, then if you’re feeling brave you can put a line through a load more. While it could also pay to note that a decent 13 of the last 20 winners also had just 10st 6lbs.
Backed up in 2022 with Lord Lariat having just 9st 12lbs, while 4 of the last 8 winners won with 10st 6lbs of less on their backs.
Those with 10st 8lbs or less are – Street Value, Daily Present, Where’s Frankie, We’llhavewon, History Of Fashion.
While those with 10st 6lbs or less are – Daily Present, Where’s Frankie, We’llhavewon, History Of Fashion
85% Of The Last 20 Winners Aged 9 Or Younger
The next Irish Grand National trend to use is age as in the last 20 renewals we’ve only seen three winners aged 10+ – these were Granit d’Estruval (2004), Lion Na Bearnai (2012) and Liberty Counsel (2013).
The last two winners were aged 7, as were five of the last nine, so suggest this age has the best recent strike-rate in the race.

Look For Horses That Ran in The Last 8 Weeks
Having had a recent run is another trend to look out for. Okay, most of the runners in the Irish Grand National field will fit the bill here, but it’s still worth having on your radar in case there are any horses coming back from a break.
This trend is backed up with 17 of the last 20 winners having raced within the last 8 weeks.
So here we are looking at horses that race inside the last 60ish days.
Just Churchstonewarrior falls down here – having run 95 days ago. The rest were in action 50 days or less ago.
Just Three Winning Irish Grand National Favourites in The Last 20 Runnings
The Irish Grand National has also not been a great race for favourite backers. Only three winning market leaders since 2003. However, on a plus this trio of winners did come in the last 9 runners – so is the tide turning?
While 12 of the last 20 jollies were also unplaced – including last year’s favourite Amirite, who was pulled-up. This year’s Irish Grand National favourite could be the Willie Mullins-trained Nick Rockett, who is looking to give the Closutton hander his third win in the Fairyhouse race.

Previous Track Experience a Plus
Looking for previous runs at Fairyhouse is another positive with 13 of the last 20 Irish National winners having tasted the track in the past. Your fancy doesn’t have had to have won at the Irish course, but just run there in the past.
Again, this is likely to be a trend that most of the 2024 Irish Grand National runners will tick but having knocked out a fair few with the weight stat, you may find one or two more to put a line through.
Don’t Be Put Off Backing a Bigger-Priced Horse
Punters are often drawn to the head of the market in most horse races, but with a big field – don’t be afraid to look a bit further down the betting.
Only two years ago we had a stonking 150/1 winner of the race, while last year Lord Lariat returned 40/1.
In fact, 15 of the last 20 winners returned a double-figure (or triple) price! While the average winning SP in the last 20 runnings is 27/1.
Only Three of The Last 20 Winners Won Last Time Out
Another thing a lot of horse racing punters will look for is coming into a race off the back of a win. Yes, in a lot of races this is a plus, but in the Irish National only three of the last 20 winners came into the race having won last time out.
The recent winners in the race are – Senior Chief, Yeah Man, Intense Raffles, Hartur D’arc and Where’s Frankie.
Trainer Dermot A McLoughlin Has Won Two Of The Last Three Irish Grand Nationals
In recent years, the Irish Grand National has been won by many different yards. Willie Mullins took the prize in 2019 for the first time and added to that 12 months ago with I Am Maximus – while Gordon Elliott broke his duck in 2018.
The lesser-known Dermot A McLoughlin yard has also mopped up two of the last three runnings with Freewheelin Dylan at 150/1 and Lord Lariat at 40/1.
The County Meath handler, however, doesn’t have a runners with his sole entry Digby not making the cut.
