2023 Maurice de Gheest Tips: Art Power To Draw Sting Out Of Rivals
With Little Big Bear not heading to France this Sunday that has made the task a lot easier for the Tim Easterby-trained Art Power in the Group One Maurice de Gheest.
The Deauville 6 1/2f race carries a first prize of just over ÂŁ192k so it’s no shock to see a massive seven of the 10 runners coming over from England to target the big pot.
One of those runners is ART POWER, who looks the one to beat according to the best UK betting sites after romping away with the Group Two Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh last month by 4 1/4 lengths.
Yes, that win came over 5f, so this classy grey has another 1 1/2 furlongs to travel here, but he’s won over 6f already this season and more importantly handles soft/heavy ground which is what’s expected at Deauville on Sunday.
This will be his first race in France but has travelled well in the past when winning many times in Ireland. Regular ride David Allen also makes the trip over.

King Gold, Fort Payne and Egot are the only three French-based runners in the field and of that trio the first two-named look to have the better chance, with King Gold having won three of his last four and will be ridden by the 2016 winner of this race – Stephane Pasquier.
The Karl Burke camp send over two – Cold Case and Skycatcher, who certainly have squeaks on their best form, while the former Wokingham Handicap winner at Royal Ascot Rohaan represents the David Evans yard but this season hasn’t fired at yet.
Sandrine, Brad The Brief and this year’s Wokingham hero Saint Lawrence for Hollie Doyle make up the field.
Best Maurice de Gheest Outsider Bet
Jockey Maxime Guyon won the Maurice de Gheest back in 2018 and looks to have a live chance of doing so again.
Away from the main play in Art Power, the Karl Burke-trained Skycatcher has a lot going for him too.
Firstly, he’s a winner at the Deauville track when romping home by 3 lengths here last time out in the Group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis (6f). Yes, a bit more is needed here upped in grade, but he’s won over further (7f) in the past and that will help in the deep ground and from his 15 career runs on the turf has hit the first two 8 times (4 wins).
He’s a bit to prove now running at the top table, but this doesn’t look the strongest Group One ever run and without taking anything away from the runners it’s probably more of a Group 2 or 3 contest (in my book) – meaning you can make cases for several of the runners leaping up in class.
