Irish 2000 Guineas Trends to Help You Find The 2023 Winner
We’ve had the English Guineas earlier this month but this weekend the focus switches to the Ireland for Guineas weekend at the Curragh.
First up is the Irish 2000 Guineas today (Sat 27th May) – a race the powerful Aidan O’Brien yard has won a record-breaking eleven times over the years.
Unfortunately the expected Irish 2000 Guineas favourite Al Riffa will miss Saturday’s big race after suffering a small setback, while it remains to be seen if the Newmarket 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean takes his chance, with the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot muted as a preferred target.
The ITV4 cameras will also be showing the Irish 2,000 Guineas today, along with races from Haydock, Goodwood and York on a bumper afternoon for horse racing fans.

Respect Horses That Ran in The Last 3 Weeks
When looking at the key Irish 2000 Guineas trends a good place to start is to look for horses that have raced in the last three weeks.
A massive 90% of the last 21 winners of the big Curragh race ticked this stat, including last year’s winner Native Trail, who was a close second in the English 2000 Guineas earlier that month.
Of the 12 Irish 2000 Guineas runners in 2023 these ran within the last 3 weeks (give or take a few days) – Bold Discovery, Charyn, Galeron, Hi Royal, Paddington, Proud And Regal, Royal Scotsman.
71% Of the Last 21 Winners Drawn 4 Or Lower
Quite a decent Irish Guineas 2000 draw stat has built up over the years too – with 15 of the last 21 winners hailing from stalls 4 or lower.
Again, backed up in the last three years with the trio of winners coming from stalls 1 and 2. In fact, 9 of the last 1o winners have from stalls 6 or lower and draw 1 has held sway with a massive 4 winners since 2014.
Recent Curragh Form Is A Plus
Having a raced at the Curragh in the past is another big Irish 2000 Guineas trend to respect with 67% of the last 21 winners tasted the track before.
The runners this year that have raced at the course before are – Proud And Regal, Paddington, Galeron, Cairo, Age Of Kings, Alexander John, Bold Discovery and Quar Shamar.
Running at Newmarket Last Time Is Something To Note
You should also look for horses that ran and Newmarket last time out and in particular the 2000 Guineas. This is because 71% of the last 21 Irish 2000 Guineas winners race at UK’s flat racing HQ last time, with 5 of those winning the English Guineas before taking the Irish version – Rock of Gibraltar (2002), Cockney Rebel (2007), Henrythenavigator (2008), Gleneagles (2015) & Churchill (2017) all did the English/Irish 2,000 Guineas double
Royal Scotsman, who has been supplemented for the race was third in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket last time out, while Hi Royal was runner-up at a stonking 150/1. We’ve also got the 4th Galeron and 8th Charyn heading over to Ireland.

38% Of the Last 20 Winners Won Last Time Out
Having a win in your most recent run is another fair Irish 2000 Guineas trend to look for, but in contrast to this stat don’t worry too much if your fancy comes here off the back of a poor run as 43% of the last 21 winners were unplaced last time out.
The last-time-out winners in the field are Paddington and Quar Shamar.
Aidan O’Brien Is the Irish 2000 Guineas Main Man
It’s no secret over the years that trainer Aidan O’Brien has farmed the Irish 2000 Guineas – winning the Group One Curragh race a massive 11 times.
The first of those wins came back in 1997 with Desert King, with the most recent being Churchill in 2017. Therefore, for O’Brien’s high standards in this race – the Ballydoyle maestro is actually on a 6-year drought that he’ll be hoping to end in 2023.
At this stage O’Brien has Paddington, Cairo and Age Of Kings in Saturday’s race.

What Is The Irish 2000 Guineas Favourites Record Like?
With 48% of the last 21 Irish 2000 Guineas favourites winning, then the record of the market leaders is a good one.
Native Trail supported the favourites record last year too and since 2014 the race has produced 5 winning jollies.
The average winning SP in the last 21 years is also just 5/1.
