2023 Goodwood Cup Trends to Help You Find The Winner

The 2023 Glorious Goodwood Festival gets going on Tuesday and we hit the ground running with a cracking renewal of the Goodwood Cup.

Last year we saw a thriller when the Aidan O’Brien-trained Kyprios won – giving his trainer his third success in the race.

However, he’s not made the race this time, so we’ll get a new name on the roll of honour and it could be this season’s Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami.

This will also be the ride of Frankie Dettori as he looks to win the Goodwood Cup for a sixth time and become the winning-most jockey in the history of the contest.

The best horse racing betting sites are making this John Gosden runner Courage Mon Ami the one to beat.

So, to help find the winner – let’s look at the key 2023 Goodwood Cup trends to look out for and hopefully by applying these to the final eleven runners it will help point you in the direction of Tuesday’s big Goodwood Group One race.

Placed Last Time Out Is Something To Look For

With a massive 86% of the last 21 winners placed last time out, this is a big stat to get going with.

Yes, most of the Goodwood Cup runners fit the bill here but there are a few that don’t – Eldar Eldarov, Broome, Lone Eagle and Enemy.

We can also take this Goodwood Cup trend a bit further as 12 of the last 21 winners won last time out. Of the 11 runners – Courage Mon Ami, Emily Dickinson, Giavellotto and Quickthorn get the thumbs up here.

Winning Group 1 or 2 Form A Plus

81% of the last 21 winners had tasted victory at Group 1 or 2 level in the past. Most of the main players are fine on this stat, but if you are thinking of betting on one of the outsiders – Enemy, Ocean Wind, Lone Eagle and Tashkhan are yet to win at the top two tables.

71% Of The Last 21 Winners Aged 5 Or Older

Age is next up, with 15 of the last 21 Goodwood Cup winners (71%) aged 5 or older. Yes, last year’s winner Kyprios kicked this stat into touch aged 4 and so did Stradivarius (twice) and Big Orange, but we’ve still seen 16 of the last 21 winners aged 5+.

Therefore, maybe a trend that is turning and so one that we might have to tread carefully around. But if you are sticking with it would mean the 4 year-olds in the race – Courage Mon Ami, Emily Dickinson, Eldar Eldarov and Giavellotto have this to overcome.

A Recent Ascot Run Is Respected

With 62% of the last 21 winners having raced at Ascot last time out, this is next up. Of course, the 2023 Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami falls into this category, as does the runner-up Coltrane.

We also saw Broome (10th), Lone Eagle (9th) and Eldar Eldarov (7) down the field in the Gold Cup.

Track form at Goodwood has often helped in the past too, with 57% of the last 21 winners ticking this stat. The good news to backers of the top two in the market – Courage Mon Ami and Coltrane – is that both has run at the West Sussex venue.

Courage Mon Ami won here in May and Coltrane was fourth in this race last year.

Look For Horses That Ran In The Last 45 Days

Running within the last 45 days is a big plus too with ALL of the last 19 winners ticking this trend. Enemy and the Marco Botti-trained Giavellotto fall down here having run 68 and 74 days ago.

How Have The Goodwood Cup Favourites Fared?

In short, it’s been a decent race for the market leaders. In the last 21 runnings we’ve had 13 winning favourites, which works out at a not-too-shabby 62% strike-rate.

Courage Mon Ami and Coltrane are the two disputing the Goodwood Cup favourites berth.

Trainers John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien Have Good Records

Most of the big stables have won the Goodwood Cup over the years, but in recent times it’s the John Gosden camp that have the best record – winning 4 of the last 6 and five overall. They run Courage Mon Ami this year in a bid to further improve this strike-rate.

The Aidan O’Brien yard have three wins in the race – which you might feel is a tad on the light side considering the sort of staying cup horses he’s had over the years. But he ended his small duck spell with Kyprios winning last year and in Emily Dickinson he’s got a live chance again.

Can Frankie Dettori End On a Goodwood Cup High?

Top jockey Frankie Dettori has won the Goodwood Cup five times during his career – the first coming with Kayf Tara back in 1999, with Schiaparelli (2009), Opinion Poll (2011) and Stradivarius (2019 and 2020) following.

With that haul he’s tied with five other jockey that include Pat Eddery and Lester Piggott – meaning if Frankie can win one more, in what will be his final ride in the race (Courage Mon Ami), he’ll become the winning-most jockey in the contest.

Overall Goodwood Cup Trends Pick

Courage Mon Ami fits most of the main stats and is certainly respected, but the call is COLTRANE, who at the age of 6 and past experience in the race just edges it.

The Andrew Balding runner was only 3/4 of a length back the last day in the Ascot Gold Cup and is one pound better off this time. You also feel Coltrane’s jockey Oisin Murphy would have learned a lot that day about the winner, with the slight drop back in trip and ease in the ground this time other pluses.
