2023 Galway Plate Trends to Help You Find The Winner
12 months ago we saw the John Joseph Hanlon-trained Hewick win the Galway Plate and since then his bargain-buy horse has won the US Grand National and also the Oaksey Chase at Sandown.
He’s back for more this Wednesday to try and defend his title as he looks to become the first back-to-back winner since Ansar in 2004 and 2005. However, if he’s to defend his title he’ll need to do so off a 12lb higher rating and the best horse racing betting sites make him a 10/1 chance to follow-up.
So, to help find the winner – let’s look at the key 2023 Galway Plate trends to look out for and hopefully by applying these to the final runners it will help point you in the direction of Wednesday’s big winner.

Horses Aged 9 Or Younger Have Dominated
The first Galway Plate trend to have in your corner is age, as a massive 95% of the last 20 winners were aged 9 or younger.
While since 1988, there have only been two winners aged 10 or older.
The good news is ALL of the 2023 Galway Plate runners are aged 9 or younger.
We can take this stat a bit further though with 50% of the last 20 winners aged 7, so this seems to be a popular age. Ash Tree Meadow, Final Orders, Hollow Games, A Wave Of The Sea and Upping The Anti are the 7 year-olds in the race this year.
85% Of The Last 20 Galway Plate Winners Carried 10-13 Or Less
Weight is next with 17 of the last 20 winners carrying 10-13 or less, while 55% of those (11) also carried just 10-10.
If the 10-13 benchmark is to be repeated then the top five on the card must overcome this – Hewick, Kilcruit, Easy Game, Lifetime Ambition and Fury Road.
A Top 4 Finish Last Time Out Is A Plus
Having a top four finish next to a horse’s name has helped in recent years too, with 13 of the last 20 winners ticking this box.
Of the 22 runners, Hurricane George, Fighter Allen, Hollow Games, A Wave Of The Sea, Ash Tree Meadow, The Goffer, Foxy Jacks, Easy Game and Hewick fit the bill.
It could also pay to note that 25% of the last20 winners won their most recent race – only Easy Game and Foxy Jacks get a thumbs up here.

How Have The Galway Plate Favourites Fared?
Over the last 20 years we’ve seen 7 of the last 20 Galway Plate favourites unplaced with only 4 of the last 20 winning.
This year it’s a tight betting market with several disputing the top spot. At this stage it’s Kilcruit that is just the Galway Plate favourite.
Note Horses With 1-4 Chase Wins
With 85% of the last 20 Galway Plate winners having between 1-4 wins to their name it’s worth spending a bit of time looking back at past form.
To save you the bother, here are the runners that DON’T fall into this bracket – Final Orders, Hewick and Easy Game.
Gordon Elliott and Henry De Bromhead Have Won 5 Of The Last 8 Galway Plates
Finally, the trainers with the best Galway Plate record in recent years are Gordon Elliott and Henry De Bromhead with 5 of the last 8 winners between them.
This year Elliott saddles an army – Ash Tree Meadow, Fury Road, Hollow Games, The Goffer, Andy Dufresne and Hurricane Georgie. While De Bromhead has Upping The Anti and Gabbys Cross, who is the mount of Rachael Blackmore.
Galway Plate Trends Picks
The Goffer: From the Gordon Elliott yard, this 7 year-old was 4th to the subsequent Grand National winner Corach Rambler in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March – beaten only 11 lengths. He stays further than this 2m 6 1/2f trip and also gets in here with just 10-5 to carry.
Hollow Games: Another from the powerful Elliott yard that love to win this race. Also, another 7 year-old, so he’s got this age stat on his side and with only 10-1 to carry gets in with a featherweight. A useful hurdler in the last past but has only had 4 career runs over fences (1 win) to suggest there is a lot more improvement to come too.
