You can see below our 2023 Ebor Handicap trends ahead of this month’s big York race on Saturday 26th August – a contest that 95% of the last 21 winners were aged 6 or younger, while 17 of the last 21 hailed from a double-figure draw.

York Ebor Handicap Trends: The Stats That Matter
The York Ebor Handicap is the most valuable flat handicap in Europe with ÂŁ300,000 on offer to the winner.
12 months ago we saw Frankie Dettori at his brilliant best when winning on Godolphin’s Trawlerman (watch below) – his second win in the York race having previously won it in 2012 with Willing Foe – another for the ‘boys in blue’.
The winning-most jockey in the Ebor, however, remains Lester Piggott with 5 successes.
This year we can expect another ultra-competitive field to line up for the 1m6f race (22 runners max), with the John and Thady Gosden entry Sweet William, who has won his last three, one of the big fancies in the betting with the best UK horse racing betting sites.
Gosden has won the race twice since 2018 (Trawlerman 2022 & Muntahaa 2018).
Being a horse race that was first run back in 1843, there are also plenty of key Ebor Handicap Trends, but – don’t worry – we’re not going to go back that far – just the last 21 years.

- Just two winning favourites since 1999
- Since 1980 only one winner aged 7 or older
- 6 of the last 9 winners were aged 5 or 6 years-old
- Trainer Sir Michael Stoute won the race in 1980, 1991 & 1996
Look For Horses Aged 6 Or Younger
The first key Ebor trend to note is the age, as a massive 95% of the last 21 winners were aged 6 or younger. Yes, most will fit the bill here but we should still be able to put a line through some.
Since 1980, there’s only been one winner aged 7 or older – which was Litigant in 2015.
We can also take the stat a bit further by knowing that 14 of the last 21 winners were aged 4 or 5
18 Of The Last 21 Winners Carried 9st 5lbs Or Less
Being a handicap then weight carried is the next thing to look for.
18 of the last 21 Ebor winners carried 9lbs 5lbs or less in weight – but it’s worth pointing out since 2018 there have been three winners between 9st 8lbs and 9st 9lbs.
We’ve also had 57% of the last 21% winners carry 9st 1st or less – however, as pointed out 3 of the last 5 winners won with 9st 8lbs+ – so could this Ebor Handicap trend be turning?
81% Of Winners Since 2002 Came From A Double-Figure Draw
Being run over 1m6f, then many feel the draw doesn’t really come into it.
Plus, with a maximum of 22 runners, then we are naturally going to get more runners from a high draw.
That said, it’s still interesting that 17 of the last 21 winners came from stalls 10+, so once the draw is out on Thursday 24th August this is still worth looking at.

Look For Horses With 3+ Runs That Season
Having three (or more) runs that season has been another key Ebor trend to note with 13 of the last 21 winners ticking this stat.
One of the big Ebor fancies Sweet William has had four runs, so is fine here, but if the Willie Mullins runner Absurde and Joseph O’Brien Royal Ascot winner Dawn Rising make it to post, they’d fall down.
Just Two Winning Ebor Favourites In Last 21 Runnings
How have the Ebor Handicap favourites fared in recent years?
The short answer is – not great – with just two winning market leaders since 2022.
Fujaira Prince (2020) and Purple Moon (2007) were the two market leaders in question.
In fact, these are also the only two favourites since 1999 to win the Ebor and 13 of the last 21 jollies have been unplaced too.
33% Of The Last 21 Winners Won Last Time Out
Coming into the Ebor Handicap in good form and off the back of a win is another thing to look for.
7 of the last 21 winners were successful in their last race, so if you think this will continue it’s another feather in the cap for Sweet William, who won well at Glorious Goodwood earlier this month.
The Irish Have Done Well In Recent Years
Irish-trained horses have done well too – with 6 wins in the last 21.
The powerful Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott, who are more famed for their jumpers, have been on the roll of honour, while former jockey top Johnny Murtagh has two wins (2014 & 2021).
Ger Lyons and Tony Martin make up the Irish-winning squad since 2002.
Respect Gosden, Murtagh and Stoute Ebor Runners
The Johnny Murtagh yard have already been given a big mention with two wins in the Ebor since 2014, so anything he runs should be noted.
It’s also an event the Gosden yard have done well in recently with wins in 2018 and 2022 – they could run Sweet William.
While despite his last winner coming in 1996, the Sir Michael Stoute yard have three wins in the race after successes in 1980 and 1991 too.
