The 2023 Cesarewitch Handicap ante-post favourite – Pied Piper – will be ridden by Ryan Moore as top Irish trainer Gordon Elliott hunts first success in Saturday’s big Newmarket race.

The Gordon Elliott-trained Piped Piper has been heading the ante-post 2023 Cesarewitch Handicap betting and his position at the top of the market strengthened further with the news top jockey Ryan Moore will ride the 5 year-old in Saturday’s big race at Newmarket.

Elliott told the Racing Post “He (Pied Piper) definitely runs,” said Elliott of the five-year-old, who was successful on his only race on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket as a juvenile. “We brought him back early for the race and think he fits the profile. He has some good back Flat form and we’re looking forward to running him.
“He needed to run at Killarney last time to qualify for the Cesarewitch as he hadn’t ran on the Flat for so long. It should have left him spot on for this.”He has good jumps form too and stays well, and it was a good run when he was sixth in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot last year.”
Pied Piper will be better known to National Hunt horse racing fans, having run a close second in the 2023 County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Fesitval, but he was also fair flat performer when trained by John Gosden back in 2021.
During his time on the level, he raced 13 times (turf and AW) – winning twice – with one of those successes also coming at Newmarket, where he heads back to this Saturday.He won a maiden on the Rowley Mile over 1m2f on heavy ground back in October 2020.After 4 months off, connections tuned him up for Saturday’s Cesarewitch with a run at the end of August at Killarney on the flat, where he finished a fair third.

Gordon Elliott Has Never Won The Cesarewitch
Being run over a trip of 2m2f on the flat, then the Cesarewitch has always been a race that also attracts the jumping trainers.
They’ve had a lot of success in recent years too, with Willie Mullins (3 wins), Nicky Henderson and Charles Byrnes all winning the race in the last five years.
We’ve also seen successes for Martin Pipe, Alan King, Philip Hobbs and Tony Martin – but, so far, it’s a race that’s eluded Gordon Elliott – who will be trying to break that duck with Pied Piper.
Ryan Moore’s Only Cesarewitch Win Came In 2022
With Ryan Moore booked to ride Pied Piper, the former champion jockey will be hoping to add to his sole success in the Cesarewitch – which came on the Martin Pipe-trained Miss Fara back in 2002.
Moore’s father – Gary – could also run the quirky Goshen in Saturday’s race, but with son Ryan committed to Pied Pier, if the unlucky 2020 Triumph Hurdle loser does head to Newmarket connections will have to look elsewhere for a rider.
