Naples celebrations are unlike any other, particularly when the city has been patiently waiting in the wings for their beloved I Ciucciarelli to lift the Serie A trophy, 33 years after their last.

Naples Celebrations Turn Fatal

Only twice have Napoli won the Scudetto before last night, on both occasions led by Diego Maradona who has been immortalised in the city with murals and shrines on every street corner, and of course with the stadium now bearing his name.

‘The Golden Boy’ will have been watching down from the heavens with a beaming smile as Victor Osimhen netted his 27th goal of a staggering season, to ensure the title was finally heading back to southern Italy.

As the final whistle blew, bedlam ensued some 800km south of Udine as a packed out watching party at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona rejoiced, with a sea of flares, flags and tears adorning the rough and ragged home of the newly-crowned Serie A champions.

On the streets of Naples, a procession of open top cars with far too many passengers lined the narrow roads, while those lucky enough to be situated at one of the many viewpoints on the arc of hills that hug the city’s coastline will have been treated to a dazzling firework display, that carried on right the way through the night.

Scenes as wild as these, in a city notorious for its deep political connection to the team and often brazen disregard for safety has, of course, led to reports of some 200 people being injured overnight.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who report that 203 fans were admitted to hospital with the majority nursing firework and flare-related injuries, as well as broken bones from fans falling off scooters and cars – in total, around 22 were reported to be in serious condition.

Elsewhere, Vincenzo Costanzo, who is an apparent known criminal, was shot dead in the Ponticelli area of the city during the festivities, with the incident also resulting in three others being hospitalised.

It is unclear what the motive behind the shooting was, but police suspect the culprit used the backdrop of thousands of fans flooding the streets as an effective disguise.
