What is the Spanish Lottery and How Can it be Played?
The Spanish Lottery is quite like no other lottery in the UK or in the world. There are weekly and monthly draws, but for the Christmas draw – nicknamed ‘El Gordo’ (the fat one) – the whole country grinds to a halt to watch it. Also unlike other draws the Spanish Lottery is not about making millionaires – the main prize may shared between dozens of people, and players have something like a one-in-10,000 chance of landing a prize.

How to Play the Spanish Lottery Draw
The Spanish Lottery is a huge tradition in Spain, starting up as long ago as 1812. It is so important in Spain that the draws were not even stopped during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and hostilities would cease when the draw was made.
This lottery is also unique in that only tickets numbered 00000 to 99999 are available. These are released in ‘series’ so once the first batch of 100,000 tickets have been sold, a new batch is released. Commonly, around 160-180 series end up being released.
Tickets are expensive too – €200 each. Tickets are sold as shares though – ten shares per ticket. If you want a whole ticket you can buy ten shares, or just one share. All this means is if your ticket wins the big prize, you could be sharing it with over 1,000 other people.
The Spanish lottery is drawn twice per week – Saturday and Thursday. There are monthly draws too but the ‘big one’ (quite literally) is the Spanish Lottery El Gordo Christmas Lottery which has the annual Spanish Lottery jackpot, which is currently €4million. The total prize fund is usually over €2billion, which is shared between all Spanish Lottery winners.
For the actual draw (which is televised, and is something EVERYONE in Spain watches) two cages are used. The first contains 100,000 wooden balls each with a ticket number. The second contains 1,807 wooden balls, each with a prize. The winning number is drawn first, then the prize second. Obviously, only one ball has the Spanish Lottery El Gordo jackpot prize. The numbers of the Spanish Lottery winners are actually sung by small children, as opposed to being announced.
Aside from the Spanish Lottery El Gordo Christmas draw, the other draws in the Spanish Lottery are a little more mundane!
The ‘normal’ Spanish lottery is the more usual type of lottery. It’s a 1-from-49 lottery in which six balls and a bonus ball are drawn. In the UK you might find it difficult to buy Spanish Lottery tickets (although doing so is legal) so it’s easier to bet on the Spanish Lottery results UK instead. There are a small number of ways that you can commonly bet on the Spanish lottery:
Straight Bet: You can place a bet on as many numbers as you wish coming up in the Spanish Lottery, up to a maximum of five. Be aware that all the numbers need to come up for you to win – for example, if your bet is on four numbers and three of your numbers come up, then you don’t win anything.
You can bet on the six-number draw or the seven-number draw (i.e. include the bonus ball). The typical odds from UK sportsbooks are given below.

So, a £10 bet on four numbers would win you £100,000 (£10 at odds of 10,000-1) if all four numbers come up. You would also of course receive your £10 stake back.
Combination Bet: Here you can go beyond five numbers. For example, if you select six numbers, then all possible combinations are covered. This is similar to a system bet such as a ‘Yankee’. If you backed six numbers, then you’d be placing six singles, 15 doubles, 20 triples, 15 doubles and six five-folds for 62 bets in total. If out of that four numbers came up, you’d win one four-fold, four trebles, six doubles and four singles. You can include the bonus ball too, if you want.
Total Value: The total sum of all the balls drawn. The total usually does not include the bonus ball, and can range from 21 to 279. The odds are dependent on the total you bet on.
What are the odds of winning when Spanish Lottery online betting?
As the twice-weekly Spanish is a 1-from-49 lottery, your odds of getting one number right is 6/49, as six numbers are drawn. This is a 12.2% chance. Two numbers is 6/49 * 5/48 for a 1.3% chance.
Three is 6/49 * 5/48 * 4/47 for 0.1% chance, or 1 in 1,000. For four it is 6/49 * 5/48 * 4/47 * 3/46 for a 0.007% chance, and for five it’s 6/49 * 5/48 * 4/47 * 3/46 * 2/45 for a 0.0003% chance. This means if you bet on five numbers (the closest you can get in the UK to the Spanish Lottery jackpot) you’re likely to be right once every 317,814 draws.
