What is the Irish Lottery and How Can it be Played?
if there’s one thing about lotteries that you probably know, it’s that (for most of them) you have to be physically present in the country when you buy a ticket. So, if you’re in the UK, do you have to hop on a ferry (or over the border, if you’re in Northern ireland) to the Emerald Isle in order to enter it? No you don’t. There are plenty of online casinos in the UK where you can buy an entry into the Irish draw.
How to Play the Irish Lottery Draw
The Irish lottery started up in 1986, but initially it was only available via scratchcards. The first live draw took place in April 1988 and weekly draws soon began once per week, every Saturday. After a few years, in which the popuarity of the lottery grew and grew, a second draw on Wednesday was added. Subsidiary draws have been added since, but the main attraction of the Irish National Lottery are the weekly draws, and especially the Irish Lottery main draw every weekend.
On Saturdays and Wednesdays there are now three separate draws – The Irish Lottery main draw Lotto, Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2. The biggest jackpot is for the first drawn, a lesser jackpot is held back for the second draw, then the smallest jackpot is for the third and final draw.
You can only buy tickets to any lottery draw in Ireland if you are physically present in the country (you can buy lottery tickets online via the Irish National Lottery site, but you need to register for the site and you can only register if you can prove that you have a residential address in the country). You can, however, place an Irish Lotto bet on the outcome of the lottery if you are not a resident of Ireland, at many leading UK-based online sportsbooks and casinos.
The Irish lottery is a 6-from-47 lotto. There are 47 balls tossed each time into the lottery machine, and six balls are drawn. A seventh bonus ball is also drawn.
There are several ways that you will be able to bet on the Irish Lottery, as follows. Note that not all online sportsbooks and casinos offering access to the Irish lotto will accept all these types of bets:
Straight Bet: You bet on one, two, three, four or five numbers coming up in the next draw. You can choose whether to include the bonus ball or not in your bet. All your Irish Lottery numbers must come up for you to win, so if you bet on five numbers and four come up, you won’t win anything. The typical odds offered by online casinos in the UK are as follows:
Balls Matched | No Bonus Ball | Bonus Ball |
5 | 150,000 | 45,000 |
4 | 8,500 | 4,000 |
3 | 700 | 375 |
2 | 60 | 45 |
1 | 6 | 5 |
So, if you were place an Irish Lotto bet worth £10, and you matched five Irish Lottery numbers from the six drawn (no bonus ball), you would win £1,500,000 (and your £10 stake back).
Combination Bet: This is more like playing the actual lottery. You can choose as many numbers as you want, usually up to fourteen. You are, however, covering all possibilties, so if you pick six numbers you could be covering 62 bets (6 singles, 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds and 6 five-folds). You do not have to cover all combo – for example in our example you could miss out the singles and doubles and place 41 bets instead. These Irish Lottery odds as the same as the table above.
Bonus Ball: Bet on the bonus ball number. The odds are around 40-1.
Bonus Ball Colour: Bet on the colour of the bonus ball. There are seven colours to choose from. The odds will be around 13-2.
First Number Drawn: Wager on the first ball drawn by the lottery machines. Odds should be around 44-1.
Total Value: The total sum of all balls drawn, not including the bonus ball, from 21 to 279. The odds are dependent on the total you back.
First Number Drawn Odd/Even: Self-explanatory. Odds around 5/6.
Hi/Lo: Bet on whether a ball drawn (you have to specify which ball) is 1-23, or 24-47. You have to make a hi/lo selection for all six balls, and you can’t cover hi and lo for the same ball. Odds around 50-1. All six predictions must be correct to win.
Odd/Even: Bet on whether a specied ball drawn will be odd or even. You have to choose for all six balls. You cannot cover odd and even for the same ball. Odds around 52-1. All six selections must be correct for the whole bet to win.
What are the odds of winning when Irish Lottery online betting?
Your odds of winning one ball is 47/1, but as six balls are drawn your odds of being right are 47/6, or 12.8%. This means for every one hundred draws, you’re likely to be right around 13 times.
The more balls you back, the longer the odds. Two balls is 47/6 * 46/5 which is 1.4%. So, in five hundred draws you’ll be lucky seven times.
If we keep going for three draws is 47/6 * 46/5 * 45/4 = 0.12%. For four it’s 47/6 * 46/5 * 45/4 * 44/3 = 0.008%.
For the big one (all five balls you bet on correct) it’s 47/6 * 46/5 * 45/4 * 44/3 * 44/2 = 0.0004%. This means that the ‘Luck of the Irish’ will strike once every 2,500 draws.
