What is the German Lottery and How Can it be Played?
If you fancy taking a punt on the German Lottery, then you need to get in your car and drive over there … only kidding! Although you cannot legally buy tickets for the German Lottery if you are based in the UK because of the German Lottery rules, you can bet on the outcome.
Betting on the German Lottery is available at a number of UK online bookmakers and UK casinos. If you have never bet on the outcome of the German Lotto before, or indeed any lottery such as the 49’s, Irish and Spanish lotteries, then read on!
How to Play the German Lotto 6 49 Draw
The German Lottery has been running since 1955, and is one of the most frequent millionaire-makers out of all the lotteries in Europe. There are actually several lotteries and lottery games that people in Germany can play, but the most popular is known as ‘6aus49’ which, as you can probably work out for yourself, means ‘6 from 49’ and that’s because the German Lotto draw involves the selection of six balls from 49 that spin around in the lottery drawing machine. In more recent times, a seventh ball – known as the ‘Super Ball’ – was added to create more prizes and German Lottery winners.
There are two draws per week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Saturday German Lotto draw is the most popular with an average jackpot around €10million (€6 million on Wednesdays). This lottery is renowned for the number of German Lottery winners it generates – over one million is the average! That’s because there are nine different winning combinations, with the jackpot being shared among anyone who matches all six numbers plus the Super Ball.
Unfortunately, as you are betting on the German National Lottery as opposed to buying tickets for it (as you can’t in the UK, due to German Lottery rules), you are not eligible for any share of the jackpot. Instead, the site where you are placing your bet will offer you odds of you successfully predicting any number of the balls (up to five) that are drawn.
To bet, head to a site with German Lotto options. Head to the lottery section and choose your numbers, then hit the ‘Place Bet’ button. Your winnings are decided by the particular sports book you are using to play the German Lottery, but are usually close to the payouts below (for a £1 bet).
Balls Matched | No Super Ball | Super Ball |
5 | 150,000 | 50,000 |
4 | 10,000 | 5,000 |
3 | 700 | 440 |
2 | 67 | 45 |
1 | 7.5 | 6.5 |
So, if your bet is £5, you choose four numbers (no Super Ball) and those four numbers are among the six drawn then you win £50,000 plus your £5 stake is returned.
It’s vital that you understand that betting on the German National Lottery is different to playing it in terms of prizes won. If you bet on five balls, then all five balls need to be drawn for you to win. If you bet on four balls (for example) and three of them are drawn, you do not win anything.
What are the odds of winning when German Lottery online betting?
Now here comes the maths. If you bet on one ball on the Germany Lottery then there’s a 49/1 chance of it coming out, but as you have six chances (or seven with the Super Ball) that’s 49/6, or about a 1 in 8 chance (or exactly 1 in 7 with the Super Ball).
Naturally, the more numbers you back, the lengthier the odds, as you can see from the table below. Note the figures are approximations, and are not precise.
Balls Matched | No Super Ball | Super Ball |
5 | 1 in 317,814 | 1 in 90,804 |
4 | 1 in 14,125 | 1 in 6,054 |
3 | 1 in 921 | 1 in 526 |
2 | 1 in 78 | 1 in 56 |
1 | 1 in 8 | 1 in 7 |

German lottery Online Betting – How to …
It is simplicity itself, betting on lotteries. You should be able to work it all out yourself, but just because we like you we’re going to point out all you need to be aware of using one of our favourite online sportsbooks, Bet365, as an example although other sites, such as the German Lotto at Betfred, are available.
The bits you are probably most interested in are as follows:
Select Draw – choose which draw(s) you are going to bet on. You will get the option of using the same numbers for more than one draw. As you can see, at Bet365 you can bet on up to four draws at once. Remember, there are two draws per week.
Select up to Five Numbers – here is where you pick your lucky German Lottery numbers. The least you can select is one, and the maximum is five. This is for a straight bet – you can select more than five if you are using a combo bet. No matter, how many numbers you pick, all of them have to be included in the final German Lotto draw for you to win.
Your Selections – here are listed the numbers that you have chosen. We’re really going for it and have selected five. You choose your stake here too – we’re putting a fiver on it. This means that when the draw arrives, if our five numbers are among the six that are drawn we would win £750,000 – luvverly!
Place Bet – check that you are happy with everything and place your bet. Note that with lottery betting, including online Germany Lottery betting, there never is any option to cash out. You’ll just have to wait until it’s time for the draw to see if you’re a lucky mann oder frauline.
Is it Legal to Bet on the German Lottery?
You don’t have to worry about the legality of lottery betting in the UK on the Germany Lottery, as long as you are at least 18 years of age. The lottery sites and betting sites where you can bet on lotteries are all regulated by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission. The only lotteries in the UK that you cannot bet on are those which you can buy tickets for, such as the National Lottery and the EuroMillions.
So, you are free to bet on the German Lottery at any of our recommended betting sites. Don’t forget that under UK law, any money made from gambling does not have to be declared to the tax man!
