What is the Australian Lottery and How Can it be Played?
Playing the Australian Lottery does not involve a trip down under. Sadly, in order to truly enter the Australian Lottery and earn yourself the chance of landing a share of the jackpot you’d have to buy a ticket, which you just can’t do in you’re in the UK.
Happily, there a decent alternative to playing the Australian Lottery and that’s betting on it, which you can do at a number of UK online bookies and UK online casinos. It’s just one of the lotteries you can bet on in the UK, a list which also includes the 49’s, Irish and German lotteries, and we’re going to show you how.
How to Play the Australian Lotto
As you’re probably aware, Australia is a big place which makes betting on the Australian Lottery a little confusing. Do you bet on the Tattslotto, the Gold Lotto, X Lotto, Lotto or the Saturday Lotto? Well – you bet on all of them as they are all the same thing. The main lottery in Australia has been running since 1972, first drawn by Tattersall, hence the ‘Tattslotto’, but only in Victoria. As this lotto grew in popularity more and more states joined up but they all called it a different name.
Don’t worry though – if you bet on the Australian Lottery in the UK it will probably be known as the ‘Australian Lottery’ or ‘Oz Lotto’ or something similar. There are a number different lotteries in Oz, but the one that you can bet on in the UK is the weekly Australian Lottery draw that takes place every Saturday. Because Australia is far ahead of the UK in terms of time zones, the draw actually takes place in the early hours of the morning, UK time. It’s a 6-from-49 draw, which makes it one of the best lotteries in the UK upon which you can bet.
As we have already established you cannot enter the Australian Lottery in the UK, you can only bet on it. This involves selecting up to five numbers that you think will come up in the next Australian Lottery draw. You choose your stake and the sportsbook where you are placing your bet will offer you set odds on your bet being correct. Note that all the numbers you bet on have to be drawn in order for you to win. This means that if you bet on four balls and three that you’ve bet on are drawn you do not win anything.
There is no set fee for betting on the Australian Lottery. if you wager £2 on four balls and win you will win double what you’d receive for wagering £1 on four balls, for example. The odds are dictated by each individual sportsbook in the UK that offers Australian Lottery betting, but they are usually along the lines as shown in the following table.
Balls Matched | Odds |
5 | 100,000/1 |
4 | 7,000/1 |
3 | 610/1 |
2 | 60/1 |
1 | 6/1 |
if you dream of winning a life-changing amount via Australian Lottery betting then you have to be carefui. Most sites will have a ‘maximum payout’ rule, although at the bigger sportsbooks in the UK it’s usually quite generous – at BetFred for example it’s £100,000 on the Australian Lottery. This means that if you bet £10 on five numbers on the Australian Lottery at BetFred and win, you’d only win £100,000 and not £1,000,000 as you might expect.
Check the maximum payout rules at any sportsbook you are using to bet on the Australian Lottery in order to avoid disappointment.
What are the odds of winning when Australian Lottery online betting?
Calculating the true odds of any bet on the Australian Lottery is fairly easy. If you bet on one number for example, then there is a 6 in 49 chance of being correct as six balls are drawn out of the 49 available. Moving up to two, you take this first probability and multiply it by 5 in 48, as you now have five chances of being correct (as five balls are left to be drawn) out of the 48 balls still available.
The mathematics continues in this way. There’s no need to get your calculator out though as we have condensed all the true probabilities in the handy table below.
Balls Matched | Probability |
5 | 1 in 317,814 |
4 | 1 in 14,125 |
3 | 1 in 921 |
2 | 1 in 78 |
1 | 1 in 8 |
Where can I get the latest Australian Lottery results UK?
Typically, the sports book at which you have placed your bets will have the latest Australian Lottery results for you to take a look at. They may also have the Australian Lottery numbers from the last few draws, but their draw history is unlikely to delve too far back into the past.
If you want more information on the past draw numbers, undertake a quick search of the internet. One site you’re likely to find of great use though is the official Australian Lottery website australia.national-lottery.com which has results going all the way back to 1986.

Australian lottery Online Betting – How to …
Betting on a lottery is as easy as playing the National Lottery online. You just select your Australian Lottery numbers and away you go. Of course, you have to set your stake when you bet on the lottery, but that’s not exactly a Herculean task either.
Just to erase any mystery about betting on the Australian Lottery we are going to take you through how to do it, using the Oz Lotto page at BoyleSports as an example
As you can see, the Australian Lottery applet at BoyleSports is very easy to use. Just click on between one and five numbers to select how many Australian Lottery numbers you want to bet on. The numbers will appear at the bottom of the applet.
Don’t be confused with the ‘Choose All Draws’ section. Most lotteries are drawn more than once per week but the Australian Lottery isn’t (just once a week) making it a rarity. With other lotteries at the BoyleSports site you can select any of the available lotteries for that week by checking the ‘Select All’ box.
The bottom of the applet is where you select your stake too. Just enter your wager and your bet amount is set.
Once everything is set there will be a green ‘Add to Betslip’ button which you can click to add your bet to your current betslip. You can bet on the Australian Lottery as many times as you like, and each line will be added to your betslip when you click this button.
When you are happy with everything, click the ‘Bet Now’ button. This will set your wager, and your bet is on!
Is it Legal to Bet on the Australian Lottery?
There is absolutely nothing illegal about betting on the Australian Lottery in the UK as long as it is down at one of the betting sites listed on this page. All these sites are licensed by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission so lottery betting is permitted. Remember, betting on a lottery and buying Australian Lottery tickets are two different things. If you bet on the Australian Lottery and you are based in the UK then you don’t have to worry about the legality of what you are doing.
One further benefit of lottery betting as opposed to buying lottery tickets – as betting on lotteries counts as gambling and gambling winnings in the UK are not taxed, then you don’t have to pay tax on winning from betting on ANY non-UK lottery.
