Location of Serie A Teams

Serie A is famed for many of its fierce rivalries, many of which exist between neighbours. The most famous city derby in Italy is the Derby della Madonnina between AC Milan and Inter. Then there is the Derby della Capitale between the Serie A teams in Rome, Lazio and Roma, while the Turin clubs Torino and Juventus contest the Derby della Mole. The oldest city derby is the Derby della Lanterna that sees Genoa and Sampdoria lock horns.

There are also rivalries between teams in certain regions of Italy. The Island of Sicily for instance, has had clubs like Palermo, Catania and Messina, while Palermo also has an inter-island rivalry with Cagliari of Sardinia. Two southern clubs Napoli and Roma contest the Derby del Sole . Further north, the Derby dell’Appennino takes place between Bologna and Fiorentina, which are separated by the Apennines mountains.

Turin and Milan are not far from each other in the north of Italy. With Juventus and the two Milan clubs being the most successful clubs in Italy, there are fierce rivalries between them. The Derby d’Italia between Juve and Inter, is the biggest fixture in Italian football.
