THE WIZARD OF EYE impressed when arriving late under Tom Marquand to land the 7f Victoria Cup here on his debut for Charlie Fellowes last month and it’s fascinating to see his connections opt for this 6f Group 1 contest rather than stay in handicap company over 7f or further. Before that success, his trainer napped him on the podcast he does with fellow Newmarket handler George Scott and talked in glowing terms of the improvement he expected for the switch to hold-up tactics (the five-year-old was usually ridden prominently when trained by Stan Moore). There could be plenty more to come and Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle. Buy at 12 in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or take a fixed odds price (9-1).

ASCOT 5.05
TORIVEGA was a big eyecatcher when finishing a close-up 25-1 third of 17 at the Curragh last time, doing best of the closers when the 100-1 winner and 11-1 runner-up swapped the lead throughout. The patiently-ridden fourth, Tango Flare, scored at Fairyhouse next time and the seventh, Coeur d’Or, who also came from the rear, ran well at Royal Ascot earlier this week, finishing sixth of 29 in the Royal Hunt Cup. Several other hold-up horses from that 6f contest have run well in defeat since and Sheila Lavery’s son of Lope De Vega is bred to appreciate today’s quick ground. Buy at 7 in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or take a fixed odds price (14-1).

ASCOT 5.40
This is only the fifth running of the 1m2f Golden Gate Handicap but like with the majority of handicaps run on the round course at Royal Ascot, it pays to avoid the inside rail, putting low-drawn runners at a disadvantage. Colts have also exceeded market expectations and backing all the colts drawn in stall 7 or higher would have found all four winners (from 24 bets) for a profit of £29.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Aidan O’Brien’s OLD FAITHFUL is the most interesting qualifier today, as he’s likely to be played late under Ryan Moore in a race featuring plenty of pace angles. Buy at 14 on the Spreadex 48.2-28.9-19.3-9.6 market or take a fixed odd price (6-1).
