Simply backing all Flat progeny of the sire Night Of Thunder on good to soft or softer going (based on race times, not the official verdict) would have found 84 winners from 435 bets (19.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £71.42 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 66.06, A/E = 1.27). CHICAGO CRITIC ran as though his comeback run was needed when third of five at Naas last month and was a winner on soft/heavy going on his second start last term. Johnny Murtagh’s three-year-old was trading as the 20-1 outsider of the field at the time of writing and that could prove to be on the generous side.

MUSICAL SLAVE (system – time of year)
MUSICAL SLAVE tends to perform best in the spring and had we backed him blind from February to May we’d have won six of our 17 bets and made a profit of £10.80. If we discard his runs in Class 1 company his record at this time of year improves to 61113293111P5 (6-13) for a profit of £14.80. Faster ground would have been preferable, but he ran with credit on heavy going at Newbury last time and there’s compensation in the price (forecast to start at 8-1).
