Edgar Davies
Edgar Davies is a legend of the game and an icon for the Netherlands. He wowed fans across the world and had successful spells at Barcelona, Tottenham, AC Milan, Juventus and Ajax.
Unfortunately, Davies got caught using a steroid substance which led to him receiving a five-month ban. At the time, Davies was playing for Juventus and he was linked with a move to Manchester United. That move never materialised after the news of the ban.
Rio Ferdinand
Ferdinand was never convicted of drug misuse, however, he was supposed to take a drugs test, which he never showed up to. He was given an eight-month ban from football for not taking the test.
Ferdinand ended up missing the Euros 2004 with England. They were knocked out on penalties to Portugal in the quarter-final. His absence was a big miss for Manchester United and Arsenal were crowned champions in their invincible-winning season.
Diego Maradona
Maradona was somewhat known for his cocaine drug addiction as well for his raw skill and dribbling. He’s a huge symbol for Argentinian football and he was apart of the squad that knocked England out of the World Cup in 1986 with his infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal.
In 1991, Maradona was playing for Napoli. He was tested positive for cocaine and was given an 15-month ban from football.
Pep Guardiola
Despite going onto to become one of the greatest football managers of all time, there was a time where Guardiola was in trouble for steroid use.
During his spell at Brescia, Guardiola was banned for five months for taking steroids. This was in the same week that former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam was also found positive for steroids.
The two were given the same punishment. Serie A was facing a huge drug problem in the 90s and early 2000s.
Andre Onana
A peculiar story indeed. Onana was loving life at Ajax under Erik Ten Hag. One day, the Cameroon international had been suffering from a headache and he took a paracetamol.
Drug tests are often at random and any player can be selected on any given day. Unfortunately for Onana, it was him. He took the test and traces of Furosemide was found, which is a banned substance.
Onana was initially banned for 12-months but after UEFA had heard his side of the story, the ban was reduced to nine months.
This was still difficult for Onana and a move to Inter Milan was forced after he struggled to get back into the Ajax team following the ban.
