Virgil Van Dijk was replaced at half-time by Ibrahim Konate in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Southampton. Why did he go off?
Why did Van Dijk get subbed off?
It’s rare for defenders to get subbed off that early on in the game. Injuries are something that the current Liverpool team is plagued with and they won’t want anything bad happening to their captain.
Thankfully, it seems as though Van Dijk’s substitution wasn’t an enforced one. The Netherlands international played the full 120 minutes of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final win and the substitution against Southampton was a simple switch between Liverpool’s first choice centre back’s.
The games are coming thick and fast for Liverpool and they’ll want to make sure their big players are fit and ready.
How important is Van Dijk to Liverpool?
Van Dijk is having the best season he’s had since his unfortunate ACL injury.
He’s filled the captain role that Jordan Henderson had left behind and has already lead Liverpool to his first trophy as leader. It was a captains header that ensured Liverpool’s Carabao Cup win.
Van Dijk and the Reds will be wanting more trophies in Klopp’s farewell season.
They’re currently league leaders in the Premier League, in the FA Cup quarter-final and they’re in the Europa League round of 16.
It’ll be an interesting final few months of the season for Liverpool.
