Liverpool had to wait 30 years to lift the league title once more. Manchester United appear to be following suit of Liverpool’s downfall.
When will Manchester United win the Premier League next?
Short answer is that no one knows. It’s been 11 years since Manchester United last won the Premier League title. Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure spiralled the club into madness. Erik Ten Hag is the fifth permanent manager they’ve had since 2013 and he’s the only one of two that has lead them to a trophy.
It was never in any fans wildest dream that Manchester United would go longer than a decade without lifting the league title again.
Rivals Manchester City and Liverpool have been the dominant English teams in the past five years which will disappoint United fans.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% takeover of the club was confirmed on Tuesday. He says he’d ‘love to knock Manchester City and Liverpool off their perch’ but some pundits don’t think that’ll happen for a very long time.
Manchester United looked like they were turning a corner as they were enjoying an unbeaten 2024, but Fulham dented their top four hopes. Now the Red Devils sit eight points behind a Champions League spot.
Too many of their big money signings haven’t worked out and it seems the club is slipping further and further away from what they once were.
Paul Merson’s Verdict
Following on from Manchester United’s shock 2-1 defeat, pundits on Soccer Saturday were in discussion over the result and the future of the club.
Paul Merson was outraged by Manchester United’s performance He said: “Man Utd were shocking. I’m not exaggerating. Absolutely shocking.
“How they think they can get in the top four… What’s the point in getting in the top four anyway? They’re not going to win the Champions League, so what’s the point in being in it? I can’t explain how bad Man Utd were. It was so, so bad.
“But, honestly, really, really poor. [Sir Jim Ratcliffe] will be watching that today thinking ‘Wow, I put a lot of money on this.’ You put all that money in and watch that today, they are a [million] miles away.
“The players as well. They are a [billion] quid away. I don’t know how they’re going to catch up. He said he wants to overtake Man City. Woah, pull it in. Try and take over a few of the others first.
“Man Utd are a million, million miles away from Man City. It’s at a stage now where you look at Man Utd and it’s like it was with England about 10 years ago, when you used to say, ‘I’m not sure they will win a competition in my lifetime.’
“That’s the way it is with Man Utd at the moment. I don’t see them winning the league any time soon. They need to go and get Dan Ashworth. I’d rather pay £30m for him than a £30m player. They need to start from the bottom.
“But this is going to be very slow. It’s not going to be overnight. If Man Utd went and won the league in the next five years, whoever is the manager should get knighted. Seriously.
“Get that team to win the league over 38 matches? Absolutely no chance.”
Tim Sherwood’s verdict
Ex-Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood had his say on when Manchester United might lift the title again. He said: “I think it might be longer than that [five years].
“We talk about them needing players but a lot of them are the manager’s players. They are players he has brought to the football club, so something is wrong.
“Maybe it’s identification of players, maybe the competitive nature of the Premier League.
“This is the most competitive league in the world. He needs players who can play consistently and compete every week and at the moment they haven’t got that.
“If I was Sir Jim Ratcliffe, would I be giving him another £200m-£500m? Not on the evidence of what I’ve seen him do.
“If they finish outside of Europe, I’d be shocked if Ten Hag was still there in the summer.”
