After flicking through the Porto vs Arsenal head-to-head record in years gone by, the stats suggest Wednesday evening’s trip to Portugal could be far less straightforward for the Gunners than many are picturing.
When Did Porto and Arsenal Last Meet in the Champions League?
As SportsLens have already explored, Arsenal’s Champions League record in their most recent last-16 appearances make for grim reading. Since the round was incorporated in 2003/04, no team has been eliminated at this stage more times (9).
Seven consecutive years of bowing out at the first stumbling block in the knockout stages leaves a bitter taste, but fortunately for the Gunners, a seven-year hiatus from Europe’s elite club competition has helped to wipe the slate clean somewhat.
It just so happens that their last victory in the round of 16 came against their upcoming opponents, Porto.
You have to rewind all the way back to the 2009/10 season to find that 6-2 aggregate victory, which of course was followed by their most recent quarter-final appearance where Lionel Messi put four past Arsenal at the Camp Nou.
Reading too much into coincidences and (not so) recent history is somewhat of a misnomer given Arsenal continue to break the voodoo that has loomed large in seasons gone by.
Champions League betting sites have them as warm favourites to progress to the last eight, but as the Porto vs Arsenal head-to-head records show, the first leg away from home could prove problematic.

Porto vs Arsenal Head-to-Head Record
Arsenal do indeed have a favourable record when it comes to facing Porto on home soil, winning all three of the previous ties in North London with a combined aggregate score of 11-0.
However, their record in northwest Portugal puts a spanner in the works; never have the Gunners managed to win in Porto.
Arsenal may well feel now is the optimal time to rectify their dismal record in Portugal, with the Gunners finding themselves in a goal-laden purple patch since the turn of the year. They are widely expected to find victory in this first leg – as our Porto vs Arsenal predictions concur – with the Dragões stumbling in recent weeks after winning just one of their previous three.
