Liverpool and Manchester City are both in action in the Premier League this week against Luton and Brentford, but no other teams are playing.
Why are Liverpool and Manchester City playing in midweek?
Manchester City host Brentford on Tuesday 20th February. This is because Manchester City were supposed to play this match in December but it got postponed due to City’s involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup.
The two played each other recently at the Gtech stadium. Manchester City were 3-1 winners on the day.
Liverpool’s match against Luton was supposed to be played this weekend but the Reds will be playing in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea instead. The game will now be played on Wednesday 21st February. The previous encounter saw Luton snatch a surprise point from Liverpool in a tense 1-1 draw.
Neither midweek games will be televised.
Chelsea were meant to play Spurs this weekend but that will also be postponed. A new date for that game has yet to be decided.
The title race
Liverpool and Arsenal would’ve celebrated their victories over the weekend, but they might’ve celebrated Manchester City’s 1-1 draw to Chelsea a little bit more.
That draw now means the title is back in Liverpool’s hands despite Manchester City having a game-in-hand. Liverpool are four points clear of Manchester City and two points ahead of Arsenal.
City can climb up to second if they win against Brentford.
Liverpool thumped Brentford 4-1 but they suffered injuries to Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez. They’re already without the likes of Allison, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai.
It could prove to be a tricky few weeks for the Reds with the fixtures coming thick and fast. Jurgen Klopp is trying to balance all four competitions at once and it could prove costly in his last season as Liverpool manager.
Arsenal are back to their best and they’re ready to jump back into the Champions League as they face Porto on Wednesday.
