Phil Bardsley says he’d up for round two in the boxing ring with Wayne Rooney. The two had a friendly fight in 2015, that ended up seeing Bardsley knockout Rooney in his own kitchen.
What did Bardsley say?
One of the most famous Premier League celebrations came from Wayne Rooney in 2015 when he scored against Tottenham. He recreated the knockout punch that went viral earlier on in the week.
Rooney has held discussions with Misfits Boxing over a potential one one-off fight and Bardsley is definitely up for facing Rooney in the ring.
Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, Bardsley recalled: “It was in his house, we’d been out watching a couple of Super Sunday games and had a skinful – probably too many than what we should have done to be honest.
“But boys will be boys, it was a Sunday afternoon, we got a little bit carried away. We ended up back at Wayne’s house, had a little bit of a spar, one thing led to another and next minute there’s blood all over the kitchen and all sorts.
“The video was getting sent around, which is a little bit embarrassing form our point of view, considering he was at United at the time as captain and I was at Stoke.
“It was a little bit embarrassing at the time but it is what it is, it’s one of those things where you’ve probably had too many drinks.”
He added: “We’d all had a few drinks so it was one of them, the timing was spot on, my jab is pretty accurate to be honest.”
Round 2 in the ring
Boxing isn’t Rooney’s main focus on that moment, but it is something that he’s considering. He was asked on the Stick To Football podcast whether he’s swapping the football manager job for boxing gloves.
He replied: “You never know!” They’ve been in touch and asked the question but I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing.”
“There’s been a few obviously. Misfits have been and that’s been all over over the news. I want to focus on getting back into management, that’s my focus.”
Rooney was sacked by Birmingham City a little less than three months into the job. He previously had managerial spells at Derby County and DC United.
Bardsley was asked if he’d be willing to fight Rooney once again. He responded: “Yeah probably. Obviously a donation to a charity of our choice and stuff, of course, it’d be a bit of fun. Why not?
“I think he’s obviously got a far bigger name than I have but he’d certainly sell an arena out, I’m sure of that.”
