NEWBURY 12.55
EAST INDIA EXPRESS started his career with a pair of good-ground Kempton wins – a bumper and a novice hurdle (2m5f) – before finishing a well-beaten fourth behind Gidleigh Park over the extended 2m4f here on soft ground. He was withdrawn at Sandown last month because soft ground was deemed unsuitable and he’s not going to be ideally served by today’s deep ground, even if the cut back to 2m will put less emphasis on stamina. The Nicky Henderson factor should ensure that he’s a shorter price than his form warrants and he can be sold in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market. Fixed odds punters might want to side with HASTHING.
Recommendation: Oppose EAST INDIA EXPRESS in Newbury 12.55
NEWBURY 2.40
It could be worth opposing those at the head of the market in the Game Spirit Chase. EDWARDSTONE has lost six on the bounce and looks a shadow of the horse who won the 2022 Arkle and BOOTHILL would prefer faster going and hasn’t raced left-handed since his Doncaster defeat at odds of 4-5 at about this time last year. It’s tempting to side with last year’s winner FUNAMBULE SIVOLA, who also won this in 2022, but he prefers good ground and it was disappointing that he could only finish sixth at Doncaster last time. The one to side with is AMARILLO SKY, despite the 378-day absence. Joe Tizzard’s eight-year-old looked like he could develop into a Champion Chase contender when landing his first two starts last term – at Cheltenham and over today’s track and trip – before injury struck when a modest fourth in the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
Recommendation: Back AMARILLO SKY in Newbury 2.40
NEWBURY 3.50
INCH HOUSE holds obvious claims in his bid to maintain his 100% Newbury record, but his jumping still gives cause for concern and the heavy ground might not help in that regard. His two course wins came on good to soft and he was turned over at odds of 7-4 on heavy going at Cheltenham last time. The one to take him on with is the Paul Nicholls-trained MAKIN’YOURMINDUP despite three straight defeats at odds of 13-8f, 100-30f and 6-4 since his Haydock win at this time last year. Those three defeats came on right-handed tracks, two of them on unsuitably fast ground, and he’s best judged on his record left-handed of 6111 (3-4), with the sole defeat on his racecourse debut when running green (9-1) in a Chepstow bumper. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
Recommendation: Back MAKIN’YOURMINDUP in Exeter 3.50
