Chelsea owner Todd Boehly could be tempted to bring in Jose Mourinho should results continue to falter under Mauricio Pochettino.
Boehly’s interest in high-profile signings dates back to his early days at Stamford Bridge, where the idea of bringing Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea particularly captivated him.
Of course, the pursuit did not materialise, and since then, Boehly has generally distanced himself from such matters.
However, with the club currently in crisis mode, Boehly is reportedly one of the influential voices at Stamford Bridge who will soon be speaking up and thinking of fanciful ideas.
Given the escalating costs of squad renovation, a managerial change seems a quicker and easier fix.
Despite the current manager’s notable credentials, Pochettino appears baffled by the task at hand in West London.
Chelsea are rocked to the core, with sources describing the side to SportsLens as “the worst group they have had in the Premier League since the 90s”.
It is not that these are bad players; it is more that this recruitment strategy has not worked at all.
Pochettino Under Scrutiny: Three Crucial Weeks Determine Chelsea Fate
The long-term plan, initially spanning a decade, has hit a roadblock, leading to frustration among both players and supporters.
The recent atmosphere at Stamford Bridge has been described as the flattest in memory, adding further pressure on Pochettino as they head into three crucial weeks to salvage their season.
Ultimately, Pochettino will be judged on results, and this week’s FA Cup replay at Aston Villa is a game in which he cannot afford to be left embarrassed.
On the back of that 4-2 home defeat to Wolves on Sunday, some reports are suggesting Pochettino is under imminent threat, but Chelsea’s board is expected to at least reach the League Cup final with Liverpool later this month before making any decisions.
Making a decision on him before the end of the season would be another major setback for Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, who just cannot get going at Chelsea despite a £1 billion spending spree.
Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Frank Lampard have all been and gone, and axing Pochettino–who only arrived last summer on a two-year contract–would be the latest indicator of just how they are failing with their vision for the club.
The recruitment policy of identifying such a specific, young profile of player still seems naive, and noises out of the club suggest there are various layers of unrest. Chelsea have focused on signing individuals, and as a result, there is still no team unity.
Sources close to the players reveal frustration during training, not just with Pochettino but also with matters beyond, including performance analysis feedback.
While basic fitness and form issues persist, some feel that the analysis of in-game moments has been overly complicated and sometimes not even relevant to certain players.
Boehly Could Be Tempted To Bring In Mourinho
Although the dressing room is not yet lost, Pochettino is navigating troubled waters.
Individual performances are not improving, raising questions about the coaching staff’s ability to elevate players. There is also confusion about why the players themselves are playing at a sub-standard level and cannot motivate themselves.
Pochettino is the man who gets most scrutinised in a moment like this, and it does not help when a character like Mourinho is out of work and lurking in the background.
The club is in dire need of a ‘special’ change to reshape its future, but even someone of Mourinho’s calibre would have his work cut out in turning around the current turmoil.
