Qatar vs Palestine Preview

2023 AFC Asian Cup hosts and reigning champions Qatar take on Palestine in the Round of 16 at Al Khor on Monday, in what will be the Palestinians’ first ever knockout round match at the tournament’s finals.

Qatar finished top of Group A after winning all three of their matches against Lebanon, Tajikistan and China, meanwhile Palestine narrowly secured advancement to the knockout stages with a third placed finish in Group C.

Makram Daboub’s side were well beaten by Iran in their opener, but after drawing with the United Arab Emirates on matchday two – qualification seemed a realistic possibility. A historic 3-0 triumph over Hong Kong helped achieve exactly that, as they were one of the best ranked third-placed sides at the tournament.

It’ll take something special to overcome the current champions at the Al Bayt Stadium, with more than 40 spaces separating the pair in the FIFA World Rankings as it stands. Qatar are currently ranked 58th in the world, while Palestine are down in 99th.

The pair meet in competitive action for the first time since 2013, where the Qataris secured a narrow 1-0 win over their West Asian counterparts at the WAFF Championship.

Like many sides on matchday three, Qatar made plenty of changes with nine new faces coming into the line-up. Bassam Al-Rawi and Mostafa Meshaal were the only two to retain their place from matchday two.

All three of their goalkeepers spent time on the field against the Chinese, Saad Al-Sheeb being replaced by Salah Zakaria at half time, before the substitute was forced off after the hour mark and was replaced by Meshaal Barsham.

Qatar Predicted Line-Up

Barsham; Al-Rawi, Salman, Mendes, Ahmed; Mashaal, Fathy, Abdulsallam; Mohammad, Ali, Afif
