Arsenal vs Crystal Palace (5-0) Report: Gunners Make Light Work Of City Rivals
Having been afforded almost two weeks of rest after their FA Cup third round exit to Liverpool earlier in the month, Arsenal returned to league action against Crystal Palace looking to bring an end to a four game winless run.
Defeats to Fulham and West Ham, as well as a draw against Liverpool prior to the cup exit comprised that four game run, however the Gunners looked incredibly determined to turn their fortunes around against the Eagles.
It took just 11 minutes for Mikel Arteta‘s side to open the scoring, with Gabriel Magalhaes heading home from Declan Rice’s corner. Their second of the afternoon came in a similar form, with Gabriel’s header from a corner being turned home via a Dean Henderson own-goal in the 37th minute.
Leandro Trossard, who started in place of Gabriel Martinelli, got in on the act in the second period. A quick counter saw Gabriel Jesus send Trossard in behind, before the Belgian sat down Nathaniel Clyne and slotted into the top-left corner past Henderson.
Martinelli was re-introduced into the fold just 10 minutes later, and looking to reclaim his starting berth – the 22-year-old netted an almost identical brace within the space of a minute in added time.
The Gunners now find themselves occupying third place in the Premier League table, two points adrift of leaders Liverpool, meanwhile Palace are just five points clear of the drop zone in 14th.
What Next For Arsenal and Crystal Palace?
Up next for the Gunners is a trip up to the Midlands to take on relegation-battlers Nottingham Forest, where Arteta’s men will be hoping to record a second successive league victory for the first time since the start of December.
As for Palace, they have a golden opportunity to pick up a much-needed three points as they welcome bottom of the table Sheffield United to Selhurst Park.
