Steven Gerrard has given a brutal response to Gary Neville after the ex-Manchester United captain revealed that he tried to persuade the Liverpool legend to join him at Old Trafford.

Neville Tried To Encourage Gerrard To Join Manchester United

After making his derby debut back in 1999, Steven Gerrard played 34 more times against Manchester United for Liverpool, winning 13 and losing 20, according to Transfermarkt.

Characterised by a mutual loathing from both sides, Gerrard’s hatred of the Old Trafford club was no more apparent than in his final appearance against them, in which he was sent off for a stamp just 1 minute after being subbed on.

Despite this hatred of all things United, former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has revealed that he tried to persuade Gerrard to join him at Old Trafford while on England duty.

Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast, Neville said: “Stevie [Steven Gerrard] told this in his book, where I went into his room with England and asked him to sign for Manchester United.

“I was meeting up with England for the Euros, and he [Sir Alex Ferguson] rang me and said it’s ambitious, but his words were, ‘Tell him I’ll go and fetch him, and I’ll walk him back down the East Lancs’.

“I went to see Stevie, and he quite categorically [rejected it] pretty quickly. He said he would never get out of Liverpool and his family would never get out of Liverpool.”
