Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 8:00 Southwell – GYPSY WHIPSER

A poor Classified Stakes race at Southwell but with 12 runners it’s a fairly competitive affair which is the first plus as, in a contest like this, most of the entries will have a chance.

The Scott Dixon runner GYPSY WHIPSER is certainly one of those with a squeak, especially after a close second at Wolverhampton just seven days ago. She’s also the top-rated in this race (50) and if repeating that last effort should not be far away……on paper.

But there are still several reasons to think backing this 7 year-old mare would still be a risky proposition. Firstly, this will be her 53rd career run and with just four past wins that means she’s operated around just a 7% strike-rate.

Gypsy Whisper Is Yet To Win On The AW

However, the last of those wins came a massive 21 runs back in July 2022, so is around 1 1/2 years without a success. However, the bigger worry if you are backing this Dixon runner is that all of her four career wins have come on the turf – from 21 runs on the AW surfaces she’s yet to record a single win!

Yes, this will be her best chance for some time to break that AW duck, but it would still be a huge concern for me. Plus, from her AW runs at Southwell these don’t make great reading either to suggest she’s got a bit to prove at this venue too. Nine runs, five unplaced and four thirds with her last three efforts resulting in 11-7-9 finishes.

The final negative is the Dixon yard have had only two winners from their last 26 runners (8%) and here at Southwell (their local track) are operating at just a 7% return with 34 winners from their last 461 runners.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for ÂŁ10.

If the horse loses, you will win ÂŁ10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out ÂŁ20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for ÂŁ10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be ÂŁ18. Or if the horse loses you will win ÂŁ10 (less any commission).
