One lucky Paddy Power horse racing punter was welcoming in 2024 with a bang after landing a five-leg New Year’s Day TV acca that saw them scoop over €125,000.
Dublin-Based Paddy Power Horse Racing Punter Celebrates 2024 In Style
Top Irish-based bookie Paddy Power had a bad start to 2024 after revealing they had to payout just over €125,000 to a Dublin-based horse racing punter after they landed a five-time on New Year’s Day.
The bets ALL came in the LIVE ITV racing action on the first day of 2024 at Cheltenham and Musselburgh – with ironically three of the winning races sponsored by the bookmaker at the receiving end of the winning acca – Paddy Power.
What Was The Winning Bet?
This €125,415.60 payout started with just a €10 each-way accumulator (costing €20 in total).
The bet had five horses in – all in the LIVE ITV races at Cheltenham and Musselburgh.
- 1:10 Musselburgh – BENSON (1st 4/1)
- 1:30 Cheltenham – STUMPTOWN (1st 5/1)
- 2:05 Cheltenham – SHAKEM UP’ARRY (1st 11/2)
- 2:20 Musselburgh – FIDELIO VALLIS (1st 7/1)
- 2:40 Cheltenham – BUTCH (1st 7/1)
€10 each-way acca – Winnings: €125,415.60
Note: prices taken were with Paddy Power and with their e/w acca+ odds
Benson Gets The Ball Rolling
Benson got the bet off to the perfect start at Musselburgh, when winning the Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle for the second year in-a-row at 1:10pm – which started 1 1/2 hours of excitement for the Dublin punter.
It was off to Cheltenham next as Stumptown, who was second in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival last season, bounced back to form to win for trainer Gavin Cromwell – seeing off the favourite Inch House by 5 lengths.
Sticking at Cheltenham, the Ben Pauling-trained and Harry Redknapp-owned Shakem Up’Arry hit the back of the net in the Paddy Power New Year’s Day Handicap Chase – powering home by 7 1/2 lengths – to keep the bet alive.
With three winners under their belt, it was back off to Scotland for the fourth leg and a competitive handicap chase that Fidelio Vallis won for trainer Harry Derham at Musselburgh.
Butch Holds On By A Neck To Land The €125k Acca
Then it was all down to Butch in the final leg at Cheltenham to land the euros and it would have been ‘heart-in-mouth’ stuff as the Olly Murphy runner was all-out at the line and winning by just a reduced neck. You feel in a few more strides the second My Bobby Dazzler would have got up (watch below), but Butch lived up to his name as was a gutsy winner and in the process gave the lucky Paddy Power horse racing punter a January 1st they’ll never forget.
Paddy Power’s Paul Binfield said: “We sponsored three races at Cheltenham today to celebrate the New Year and then one of the shrewdest punters ever not only got all three of those winners correct, for good measure they also smashed into a couple at Musselburgh.
“Last night will be nothing compared to their celebrations tonight. Cheers!”
