Lay Of The Day Horse Racing Tips: Thursday 28th December 2023
The UK and Ireland afternoon horse racing cards on Thursday come from Catterick, Newcastle (AW), Limerick (Ire) and Leopardstown (Ire) and you can join up with top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win a race.
See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day pick – a fancied horse that he’s taking on today with the best horse racing betting sites.
Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 12:40 Leopardstown – MUSIC OF TARA @4.1
Music Of Tara has a consistent profile – having hit the top three in her last four starts. However, this 6 year-old mare is still to win a race under rules from nine runs, with her only success in a Point back in September 2021.
Yes, she’s gone close several times, but has also been turned over as favourite four times in her career, including at Wexford back in March at odds-on.
All this suggests she’s a horse with ability but also one that finds it hard to translate that form to the track. She’s also raced twice at Leopardstown and been beaten both times. While the Henry De Bromhead yard doesn’t exactly have eye-catching track stats with their hurdlers. They are just 8-from-120 (7%) with their hurdles and 15-223 (7%) overall at the course.
Add in jockey Rachael Blackmore not having much better track stats at 13-from-132 (10%) overall and just 7-from-87 (8%) over hurdles, then Music Of Tara looks worth taking on in a race that we’ll have plenty of others running for us too (24 entries declared).

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?
In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.
With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win, by effectively becoming a bookmaker.
This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.
For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1), then you could lay this horse for £10.
If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission), or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).
See below another example – if you were to lay Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.
You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18, or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
