Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick has discussed his side’s unusual indirect free-kick winner against Swansea on Saturday.

Swansea Vs. Middlesbrough

Football fans watching Swansea City’s Championship fixture against Middlesbrough saw a once in a blue moon occurence on Saturday.

With the scores level and the game entering its final stages, Swansea shot-stopper Carl Rushworth picked up a back pass from his own defender Harry Darling.

As a result, referee James Bell awarded an indirect free-kick inside the Swansea penalty area. From the resulting indirect free-kick, Aussie midfielder Samuel Silvera had the ball rolled to him and confidently drilled the ball past a crowd of Swansea players into the net.

The rare goal saw Middlesbrough head back up north with all 3-points and sees them move into 12th spot in the Championship table.

What Did Carrick Say About Middlesbrough’s Indirect Free-Kick?

Speaking after the game about Middlesbrough’s indirect free-kick against Swansea, Carrick said: “It’s a strange one. I’ve not seen it for a long time.

“It certainly doesn’t mean it’s a guaranteed goal because it’s not easy to find a way through.

“It was quite interesting to what the lads came up with because it’s not something you see often and therefore we haven’t planned for it. I’ll hold my hands up to that.

Carrick added: “I definitely didn’t ever take one in my career. I was down the line because I had Ronaldo and Rooney ahead of me! I actually remember Cristiano scoring one like that at Old Trafford. But you’re going back a long time for that. I was nowhere near it because they were better than me!”

“The game was back and forth but I don’t think I’ve ever had an indirect free-kick that close before. I have to take the opportunity when it comes,”

Swansea manager Alan Sheehan also had his say on the incident: “It was a crazy decision, whether it’s right or wrong it’s a big call,” Sheehan said.

“Is it an interception or a back pass? Carl Rushworth is one of the best keepers in the league with the ball at his feet, so for him to think he can pick it up tells me enough.”
