Arsenal are well and truly in another title race this season as they try and correct last season’s unfortunate outcome. The only thing that is missing from their team is a deadly striker and that’s something they will look to put right in the January transfer window.

Why are Arsenal considering Dominic Solanke instead of Ivan Toney?

Arsenal are keeping their eye on Solanke as a cheaper alternative to Toney as Brentford have slapped an £80m price tag on him.

It’s believed Bournemouth value Solanke at £50m which would be more in Arsenal’s ideal price range. Solanke has enjoyed a tremendous start to the season with the Cherries; scoring nine goals in 19 appearances in all competitions.

As for Toney, he hasn’t played all season as he’s waiting out the rest of his eight-month suspension for breaching betting rules. Toney will be allowed to play again in January.

Toney scored 20 goals for Brentford last season and is seen by Brentford as one of the best finishers in the league.

Toney has one England cap when he came off the bench in a match against Ukraine in March. The chances of Gareth Southgate picking him in the Euro squad depends on how well Toney hits the ground running after his eight-month ban.

Solanke also just has one cap all the way back in 2017 when he was playing for Liverpool.

What’s wrong with Arsenal’s current strikers?

Arsenal fans, pundits and the media have all shown dissatisfaction with the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah in front of goal this season.

Jesus is Arsenal’s number one striker but the Brazilian has missed a number of great opportunities for Arsenal in games. Jesus has seven goals in 18 appearances whilst Nketiah has six in 23 games.

Keeping Jesus fit also remains an issue as well. In the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Jesus picked up an injury which saw him miss the majority of the season. He has also picked up a few niggly injuries in this season too which has kept him out for a few games.

Arsenal need a clinical and reliable striker if they want to become favourites for the Premier League title.
