Liverpool are one of England’s and Europe’s most successful clubs and naturally, they have had an array of talent showcase their skills over the years on the red half of Merseyside.

Some of these players will have been produced via the academy, others are bought in to the club from league rivals and some of the more recent additions have been secured for mega-money from abroad.

Here at SportsLens, we take a look back at the Red’s overall spending, what players have proved great value for money and what Liverpool’s transfer record is and how much they paid.

Liverpool Transfer History

Liverpool’s overall transfer history is fairly varied, they have spent big and they have snared brilliant players for very modest fees. During their most successful years in the 1970’s and 1980’s, lavish spending wasn’t really the norm but they did spend ‘big’ for the time.

Fast-forward to the modern era, Liverpool‘s transfer record has been broken several times. The vast majority of those Liverpool transfers were for oversees stars but they have spent big domestically, and some have proven to be better than others.

Liverpool Record Signing

Liverpool’s record signing was for Darwin Nunez in the summer of 2022. The Uruguayan striker set the Reds back £85.3m and he has had an indifferent start to his Anfield career so far. The 24-year old has featured in 65 games, scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions.

Stats like that aren’t all that bad, in theory. However, Nunez does generate an unfortunate reputation for his bad misses and he was sent off on his home debut against Crystal Palace in 2022. Ever since then, he has found it difficult to win over the Anfield faithful but with age and Jurgen Klopp on his side, he will surely come good.

Liverpool Most Expensive Signings

Liverpool’s most expensive signings have predominantly come in the last ten years. Darwin Nunez – of course – is their most expensive signing but there are other current Reds stars who all cost big to acquire their signatures. Virgil van Dijk cost £75m, Alisson cost £65m, Dominik Szoboszlai cost £60.1m, Naby Keita cost £52.7m and Luis Diaz cost £50m.

Further down the list, Diogo Jota cost £45m, Cody Gakpo cost £44m, Mo Salah cost £43.9m, Fabinho £43.7m and Ibrahima Konaté cost £36m. All of the players mentioned, perhaps other than Keita, have all gone on to enjoy fruitful careers at Anfield.

Mo Salah Transfer Fee

We’ve picked out and identified Mo Salah‘s Liverpool transfer fee because of how vital he is to the club. The main one being, he is easily the best value for money signing Liverpool have ever made. In his maiden campaign, he broke several club records and has gone on to win everything in club football whilst at the Reds.

Salah set the Reds back less than £44m in the summer of 2017 and has gone on to earn legendary status for his brilliant achievements with the club. The Egyptian King recently netted his 200th goal for the club, which you can see here, and he managed his double century in just 327 appearances. He has helped the club win the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool Transfer Targets

Liverpool’s transfer targets mainly feature Fulham star midfielder Joao Palhinha and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface, whom Jurgen Klopp recently called ‘interesting.’ Palhinha has been very impressive for Fulham and almost joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023.

Nigerian forward Boniface has been a huge hit for Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, netting 14 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions. Of course, other names will be linked with the Reds in recent weeks as the January transfer window approaches but Palhinha and Boniface could genuinely improve the Merseysiders.

Note: Liverpool take on arch enemies Manchester United on match week 17 of the 2023/24 Premier League season. The best UK betting sites make the Reds 1/3 match favourites, the draw 5/1 and United 8/1.
