Many eagle-eyed viewers would have spotted that Andros Townsend has a slight name change on the back of his shirt.
Why has Townsend changed the name on his shirt?
Townsend’s shirt name now reads ‘Townsend Sr.’ When asked about it on The Breakfast show; he replied: “It’s simple really, my son is Andros Townsend Jr. I changed my name by deed poll to Andros Townsend Sr. when he was born.
“I had a couple of years out of the game so it was only natural that I come back and honour my son and I changed my shirt name to suit my new name.
“Hopefully one day when my boys in the Premier League running around on the wing, he can have Townsend Jr. on his shirt and it will all make sense.”
Townsend was asked if his son has started to play; he responded: “He’s got absolutely zero interest in the [football] world.
“I take him to training but he just wants to run around and fight with his sister and jump up and down and do usual stuff four-year-olds wanna do!”
When did Townsend move to Luton?
Townsend joined Luton on a free short-term deal. Everton decided to not renew his contract and was without a club until Luton signed him in October. Townsend experienced an unfortunate ACL injury that saw him out of action for 18 months. In his first season with Everton he had 11 G/A. The English winger also had spells at Tottenham, Newcastle and Crystal Palace.
Townsend was starting to get worried he’d have to retire at 32. He told talkSport: “It did come to a point where we are, in October now, I felt like my time might have gone. I started doing media work, working with Sky quite regularly and what have you. People were saying ‘wait until January, you might get a chance in January’.
“The problem is, if they didn’t want to take a look at me after not playing in 18 months, what is another six months? You are talking two years.
“So I would never officially retire but I feel like my time may have gone but hugely grateful to Rob Edwards and Gary Sweet, the chief executive at Luton.”
Townsend has made eight appearances for Luton so far and has assisted two goals for them. It’s clear that Hatters are keen on him and it should be expected that Luton extend his contract when the time comes in January.
