Off the back of a shocking 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth on Saturday, Manchester United welcome Bayern Munich to Old Trafford in a must-win Champions League Group A matchup.
Luckily for the Red Devils though, Bayern look somewhat beatable after they were also on the end of a shock league defeat at the weekend. The Bavarians were battered 5-1 away at Eintracht Frankfurt in what was their first Bundesliga loss of the campaign.
Anything other than a victory for Erik ten Hag’s side will guarantee their exit from the competition on Tuesday, but even with a win – their advancement to the knockout stages isn’t guaranteed.
In order to secure a spot in the last-16, not only will they need to beat Bayern, but they’ll also need the group’s other match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray to end in a draw. Any other kind of result in that one would mark the end of United’s knockout stage hopes.
The only thing a win over the Bavarians does guarantee, is a third place finish at the very minimum. Achieving this would see the Red Devils drop down to the Europa League, whereas a fourth place finish would see them exit Europe altogether.
