Aston Villa’s narrow 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Saturday saw them achieve a club record 15th successive home Premier League win.

John McGinn’s early opener was enough to earn all three points at Villa Park, putting Unai Emery’s side just two points off league-leaders Liverpool.

Back-to-back victories over title favourites Manchester City and Arsenal may spark hopes of an unexpected challenge for their first league title since 1981.

Incidentally, the Gunners were the last side to beat Villa on their own turf when they completed a comeback to win 4-2 back in February.

An inspired display from goalkeeper Emi Martinez was required to deny chances from the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, and Martin Odegaard.

Kai Havertz had the ball in the back of the net late on, but it was ruled out for handball following a lengthy VAR check.

Ultimately, Villa held on to secure all three points and continue their remarkable run at home, breaking their previous records set in 1903 and 1931.

Emery’s side turn their attention to the Europa Conference League, as they prepare to face Zrinjski Mostar on Thursday, before travelling to Brentford in the Premier League.
