Mikel Arteta just couldn’t contain his excitement when Declan Rice scored a late winner in their 4-3 win over Luton. Arteta’s celebrations have got him in a spot of bother as he’ll be facing a ban for Arsenal’s next game.

Why has Arteta received a ban?

Arteta stepped out of his touchline whilst he was celebrating Arsenal’s late winner which means he picked up a yellow card. All managers will receive a one-match ban if they pick up three yellow cards in a season. The late yellow against Luton was Arteta’s third which means he will have to sit in the stands during Arsenal’s visit to Aston Villa.

The Rice winner saw Arsenal go five points at the top of the table ahead of title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. Aston Villa have won all their Premier League games at Villa Park this season but without Arteta guiding his troops to victory, the game could be even harder for Arsenal than imagined.

Takehiro Tomiyasu picked up a bad injury in the Luton game too and it’s understood he’ll be out of action until February. The selection for right-back is getting slim now with Tomiyasu out injured and summer signing Jurrien Timber not expected to play again till next season.

Arteta’s reaction

Arteta was asked if his late booking was worth it. He told BeIN Sports: “Yeah, I could not be sitting on my seat, unfortunately.

“So I left there, I had no spatial awareness at all. It was just pure emotion. So if that’s a yellow. Okay, it’s a yellow.”

The Spanish manager could be facing further punishment too as the FA have yet to decide Arteta’s fate over comments he made towards VAR over a controversial awarding of a goal against Newcastle which led the Gunners to lose 1-0.

Arteta stunned audiences as he branded the decision as ’embarrassing’ and a ‘disgrace’ on live television.
