The Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase is one of the strongest renewals for years and the early pace, likely to be set by THE REAL WHACKER, is sure to be unrelenting. Those lower down the weights could enjoy an advantage and it’s interesting to note that horses with an official rating of 149 and above are just one from 61 in the past ten years. My rather long shortlist of this 2m4f contest features mostly those in the bottom half of the handicap – I’m especially interested in the Venetia Williams-trained EASY AS THAT (number 12) – and a buy of DOUBLE NUMBER OF WINNER at 13.75 with Spreadex looks warranted.

WETHERBY JOCKEYS
Having successful fielded against BRIAN HUGHES at Sedgefield earlier this week I want to be with him at WETHERBY this afternoon where he has some very interesting rides, especially in the chases. JUNGLE JACK, winner of his sole point-to-point, has landed five of his nine starts under Rules and can make it three from three on his seasonal debuts when he tackles the four-runner novices’ handicap chase (12.44), while CORNERSTONE LAD, a one-time Grade 1 winner, likes Wetherby and goes well fresh, so might be able to pick up five or ten points in the 1.54 despite the modest recent form of the Micky Hammond yard. Of his rides over hurdles, Donald McCain’s RICHMOND LAKE (3.04) could be hard to beat after his yard emerged from a quiet spell with a double (12-1 and 15-2) at Doncaster on Friday, and TOMMY TIME might be able to upset Alan King’s Favour And Fortune in the 2.29.
