Bournemouth brushed Newcastle United aside with a comfortable 2-0 to record their first victory against the Magpies since 2017 and move clear of the danger zone.

After a goalless first half, Dominic Solanke opened the scoring on the hour mark with his first career goal against Newcastle. The frontman capitalised on a fortunate ricochet from Joe Willock which sent him through on goal, making no mistake of firing home past Nick Pope at the near post.

13 minutes later, he had another. Lewis Cook’s corner was flicked onto the post by Luis Sinisterra and Solanke pounced first to poke home and double the Cherries’ lead.

The victory marked Bournemouth’s first win against Saturday’s opposition across any competition for the first time since 2017, recording four losses and four draws in the process respectively.

According to Premier League betting sites, Newcastle’s odds to finish in the top four have went out to 7/4 – whilst Bournemouth remain fourth-favourites to be relegated to the Championship at 23/10.

The Magpies have now lost two consecutive games for the second time this season, following defeat in the Champions League earlier this week at the hands of German outfit Borussia Dortmund.

Newcastle were missing a number of key players through injury and suspension, including Bruno Guimarares, Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes, Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, Jacob Murphy and Matt Targett.

Skipper Kieran Trippier was also involved in an altercation with an away fan after the full-time whistle, where he was captured asking a fan: “Have the lads not given everything? How many injuries do we have?”

Even Manchester United have now moved above Newcastle in the Premier League table, a telling sign of the latter’s struggles in recent weeks. Luckily, the international break is right around the corner which should give them a good opportunity to regroup and recover.
