The three-time British Champion jockey Ryan Moore won the lucrative 2023 Breeders’ Cup Turf on Auguste Rodin – scooping the £1.7m first prize. However, Moore had to give some of his winners’ percentage back after being hit with a $20k whip fine for the winning ride.
Ryan Moore Breeders’ Cup Whip Fine ($20,800) For Auguste Rodin Breeders’ Cup Turf Ride
Ryan Moore had two winners at the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Meeting at Santa Anita this year. The first came on the Friday with Unquestionable in the Juvenile Turf, while the other success came in the Breeders’ Cup Turf – one of the biggest horse races of the meeting.
Moore steered home the Aidan O’Brien-trained Auguste Rodin up the inside rail to win the £1.7m first prize, but after striking this year’s Epsom Derby winner once over the permitted limit landed himself a hefty $20k fine by the Santa Anita track.
In California the set whip rules are restricted to six strikes.
You can see the full fine letter below that was issued to Moore, who will have seven days to pay from the date of the ruling.
However, despite this $20k Ryan Moore Breeders’ Cup whip fine, the value of the Breeders’ Cup Turf was a cool £1,733,333.33 to the winning owners – Michael Tabor, Derek Smith and Mrs J Magnier & Westerberg.
Moore would have received a percentage of that winning prize and even though he might be on a separate deal – British jockeys get approx. 8.5% of any advertised winning prize money.
Therefore, even at this rate, Moore would have banked a cool £147,333 – so paying the $20k fine won’t be a problem.
O’Brien Wins His Seventh Breeders’ Cup Turf
Auguste Rodin’s Breeders’ Cup Turf win was giving trainer Aidan O’Brien his seventh success in the race and remains the most successful handler in the history of the contest. While it was Ryan Moore’s second win after taking the prize in 2015 with Found, who was also trained by O’Brien.
The two wins for Moore at the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Meeting took his overall tally to 14.
